Raceboard World Championship 2005
Cadiz, Spain

The 130+ windsurfers from 24 nations gathered in Cadiz, Spain to compete in the Raceboard World Championship, where they were faced with difficult wind conditions on the first day of racing. However the tricky conditions proved no obstacle to Patrik POLLAK (SVK) and Mari Carmen VAZ (ESP), who shared three bullets between them to top the men's and women's leaderboards at the end of day one.
The first race of the day started with the Levante wind blowing from the east at around 20 knots, although it had dropped to between six and seven knots by the time the last sailors were finishing. After several hours waiting on shore, the sailors started the second race just after 1700 hours local time with the wind blowing from the south at around ten knots.

Yesterday's wind conditions favoured the traditional boards over the new Olympic windsurfing equipment the RS:X, and the leaderboard is dominated by the sailors in the youth and master's categories early on. VAZ, who finished second in the Raceboard Europeans in 1993, 1995 and 1996, leads the women's fleet after wins in both of the day's races, whilst POLLAK is the overnight leader in the men's fleet, but is tied on points with Max WOJCIK (POL) and the current Spanish Formula Windsurfing champion, Fernando MARTÍNEZ DEL CERRO. Curro MANCHON (ESP) is just one point behind and three points ahead of the current Mistral World Champion and winner of the RS:X Cadiz Race last weekend, Nicolas HUGUET (FRA).

The forecast for today is for a steady westerly wind between twelve and 15 knots.
