Round Ireland Record Ratified

The World Sailing Speed Record Council (WSSRC) has ratified Michel KLEINJANS (BEL) single-handed Round Ireland record.

In newsletter 102 the Secretary to the WSSRC, John REED announced the ratification of the following record:

Record: Around Ireland Single-Handed Monohull
Yacht: Roaring Forty, Open 40
Skipper: Michel KLEINJANS (BEL)
Dates: 1-5 October 2005
Start time: 12:57:49 hours UTC on 1 October
Finish time: 14:51:18 hours UTC on 5 October
Elapsed time: 4 days, 1 hour, 53 minutes and 29 seconds
Average speed: 7.2 knots (course length is 708nm)

Previously, the record was held by Irishman Michael LIDDY in a time of 5 days, 12 hours and 11 minutes.

Lithuania's Juozas Bernotas came out on top in the Men's RS:X whilst Russia's Stefania Elfutina was triumphant in the Women's RS:X. Both sailors claim the first Abu Dhabi ISAF Sailing World Cup Final spots whilst Jock Calvert (AUS) and Joanna Sterling (AUS) picked up the Oceanic spots for the Emirati finale.

A tight group of five young Papua New Guinean (PNG) Laser sailors are stepping up their 2015 Pacific Games competition program using this week's ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. PNG is one of 33 countries represented at the important Oceanic event, the largest Olympic sailing regatta in the southern hemisphere.
