RPAYC Team Win

Beneteau Australian Youth Match Racing Championship 2005

Melbourne, Australia

Hamish ROUGHLEY, Ian McKILLOP, John DAHLENBURG and Jeremy ROBERTS have won the ISAF Grade 3 Beneteau 2005 Australian Youth Match Racing Championship.

Representing the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club and coached by Traks GORDON, the team were declared winners as they were top of the round robin when racing was abandoned this afternoon.

NSW took a clean sweep, with Evan WALKER's team from the CYCA in Sydney placing second and team mate Tom BARKER and team finishing third. Royal Sydney Yacht Squadron's three times ISAF Youth World Sailing double-handed dinghy Champion Nathan OUTTERIDGE finished fourth.

The regatta was hampered by poor conditions, too wild for racing on Saturday and then light and shifty for Sunday and Monday. Due to the delays a round robin could not be completed and results were taken from the 11 completed flights. Average points were used to determine some of the lower placings.

Today brought more frustrating weather on Melbourne's Port Phillip Bay. Racing started early this morning and two flights were sailed in a NW 10 knot breeze. The wind then dropped off for two hours before filling in from the SW at under five knots.

Lithuania's Juozas Bernotas came out on top in the Men's RS:X whilst Russia's Stefania Elfutina was triumphant in the Women's RS:X. Both sailors claim the first Abu Dhabi ISAF Sailing World Cup Final spots whilst Jock Calvert (AUS) and Joanna Sterling (AUS) picked up the Oceanic spots for the Emirati finale.

A tight group of five young Papua New Guinean (PNG) Laser sailors are stepping up their 2015 Pacific Games competition program using this week's ISAF Sailing World Cup Melbourne. PNG is one of 33 countries represented at the important Oceanic event, the largest Olympic sailing regatta in the southern hemisphere.
