"World Youth Sailing Week" Proclaimed In Kingston

Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship 2007
Kingston, Ontario, Canada

The 13-20 July has been proclaimed "World Youth Sailing Week" in the City of Kingston as the 2007 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship comes to town. The Kingston City Council demonstrated their support for the championships, which will host youngsters from 52 nations in Canada this July as over 200 of the world's top young sailors do battle on Lake Ontario.

The recognition has been granted as the City of Kingston hosts the 37th edition of the ISAF Youth Worlds, which is being sponsored by Volvo for the eighth time. The City of Kingston demonstrated their enthusiasm for the event, proclaiming it 'a time to celebrate sport and culture in Kingston, the fresh water sailing capital of the world'.

Fiona KIDD (CAN), chair of the ISAF Youth World Championship Sub-Committee, said, 'To have a host city bestow such a proclamation on the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship is truly an honour and a testament to the importance of this event within sailing and sport in general. I hope that the legacy for the City of Kingston will be one of pride and friendship between nations.'

World Youth Sailing Kingston encourages all interested people to become involved with the event. Highlights will include the athlete's parade and Opening Ceremony on 13 July, Closing Ceremony on 20 July, and of course, the racing, taking place from 14-20 July. About The ISAF Youth Worlds

The ISAF Youth World Championship is ISAF's longest running event, having taken place every year since the first Youth Worlds hosted by Sweden in 1971. The 37th Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship takes place from 12-21 July, sailed out of the Portsmouth Olympic Harbour in Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

2007 will be the eighth ISAF Youth Worlds to be sponsored by Volvo. Italy are the current holders of the Volvo Trophy, awarded annually to the top performing nation at the Youth Worlds.

Past notable winners include American's Cup skippers, Chris DICKSON (NZL) and Russell COUTTS (NZL), Volvo Ocean Race sailor Stuart BANNATYNE (NZL) and many Olympic Champions including Robert SCHEIDT (BRA), Ben AINSLIE (GBR) and Siren SUNDBY (NOR).

For the fifth year in a row the ISAF Athlete Participation Programme (APP) will assist young athletes from developing sailing nations attend the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship. Since its launch the APP has helped over 100 sailors attend the Championships, further spreading the appeal of youth sailing's premier event.
