Austrians Lead On Day Two Of 49er European Championship

Rain and shifty winds were the standard on both 49er courses for day two of the qualifying series of the European Championship in Gwdnia, Poland.
The outer course PRO Atanosios Papantonio described wind oscillations of 40 degrees during the day with the velocity ranging from 12-20 knots over the course.

The Nicos - Nico Delle - Karth and Nikolaus Resch of Austria who are the current ISAF world number one crew and also leaders of the ISAF Sailing World Cup, sailed a 4-3-2-1 to take the lead and break the three-way tie from yesterday.

Their finishes were almost matched by Stephen Morrison and Ben Rhodes of Great Britain who have moved into second, but are counting their first race today of a 12th as their discard.

The 2010 World Championship bronze medalists the brothers Pietro Sibello and Gianfranco Sibello of Italy had a tough day on the course dropping them to fourth overall followed by ISAF world number two team of Emmanuel Dyen and Stéphane Christidis of France who also lost ground to stand in fifth.

Racing continues for the qualification series tomorrow with the finals to begin on 8 July.
