US SAILING
Miami, Florida, USA

After four days of racing in US SAILING's Junior Olympic Sailing Festival in Orange Bowl, Miami, FL, the champions in eight classes were crowned last Thursday afternoon.
US SAILING President Janet BAXTER and Olympic gold medalist Magnus LILJEDAHL presented the top finishers in each class with a trophy. A record of more than 660 competitors from 11 countries participated in the event, making it the largest youth regatta in the country. The event is part of US SAILING's USA Junior Olympic Sailing Festival program presented by West Marine and was hosted by Coral Reef Yacht Club and the US Sailing Center of Miami.

Paige RAILEY (St. Peterburg, Fla.) dominated the 112-boat Laser Radial fleet, winning eight out of ten races. Railey was closely followed by Kyle ROGACHENKO (Collegeville, Pa.). Oliver RIIHILUOMA of Bermuda won both the Optimist Red Fleet and the overall Optimist championship from a fleet of over 210 boats.

In a hard-fought Club 420 race, San Diego sailors Adam ROBERTS and Marla MENNINGER beat local Miami sailors Brian KAMILAR and Simon SANDERS by just four points after 12 races. The Laser 4.7 fleet, sailed for the first time this year, was dominated by Puerto Rican sailors with Gabriel RAMOS taking the top prize.

The sailors in the Optimist Green Fleet enjoyed a 30-minute presentation on sportsmanship given by clinic instructor and 2004 Developmental Coach of the Year Tom COLEMAN. In addition to the trophies awarded to the top competitors, the Magnus LILJEDAHL Sportsmanship Trophy was presented by Liljedahl himself to Radial sailor David HERNANDEZ (Miami, FL). Hernandez received 14 nominations from his fellow sailors after he left the Laser Radial racecourse to come to the aid of a capsized Laser 4.7 sailor who was calling for help.
