100 Years Of The Metre Classes
Cowes, Great Britain

For the first time ever, International Metre yachts from all over the world are being brought together for an international Regatta hosted by the Royal Yacht Squadron at Cowes, the birthplace of yachting, in July 2007.
The event marks the centenary of the International Rule, the 1907 formula which began the growth of international yacht racing and led to the creation of some of the world's most beautiful and exciting racing yachts. The Preliminary Notice of Race is now available.

At the Regatta will be the Twelve Metres, including legendary America's Cup defenders and challengers; the elegant Eight Metres; and the big Six Metre fleet will be holding their World Championship during the week immediately before the Regatta. Other classes, from the singlehanded 14ft 2.4 Metre class to the mighty 120ft J-Class, have been invited to race in the Solent.

Racing will be managed by the Royal Yacht Squadron along similar lines to the highly successful 2001 America's Cup Jubilee with a combination of windward-leeward and round the buoys courses and a race round the Island designed to give exciting, safe racing for every class and level of crew. Entries will be limited to berthing available.

Onshore spectators will enjoy great race viewing (including a sail-past by these beautiful classic yachts), 'heritage of yacht racing' shows and lots more. Racers will be able to meet Metre sailors from all over the world at a series of receptions, forums and events culminating in a centenary Metre Ball.

The event is being planned by The International Metre Association, a non-profit organisation formed to further the Metre Classes around the world and The Royal Yacht Squadron who will be Organising Authority. The Regatta is supported by the International Sailing Federation as part of the 2007 ISAF centenary celebrations.

Title and partner sponsors are actively being sought, and interest in the event's strong racing heritage is already high. It is intended that the Regatta will be formally launched at a reception and press conference at the Royal Yacht Squadron as soon as possible during 2005.

Racers and owners are invited to visit the website for further details and the Preliminary Notice of Race.
