At 1200 local time today, the postponed start of the second leg of Around Alone got underway from Brixham, Torbay with the fleet now heading towards Cape Town in South Africa.
After a crowded start with a plethora of spectator craft surrounding the fleet to see them off as they made their way upwind to the first mark, Derek Hatfield led followed closely by Bernard Stamm. After a near collision between Emma Richards on Pindar and Graham Dalton on Hexagon, it was Bobst Group-Armor Lux who led at the first mark.
Early leader in Class One is yet again Bernard Stamm on Bobst Group-Armor Lux and is followed half a mile back by Emma Richards on Pindar. Everest Horizontal with Tim Kent was the first Class Two boat as the fleet passed Berry Head.
Due to the retirement of Patrick de Radigues after leg one , six boats started in the class as they head across the English Channel and out once again into the Atlantic Ocean. Bruce Schwab aboard Ocean Planet has received a new boom and continues to make preparations for this leg. He was hoping to join the leg at some point this afternoon.
The boats are due to arrive at their second destination Cape Town in South Africa sometime in November.
