Albaria Cento Cup 2005
Mondello, Sicily, Italy

After the first day of match racing yesterday in the ISAF Grade 1 Albaria Cento Cup in Mondello, Italy, Australia's young star, Seve JARVIN sits on top of the pile with a 4-1 record.
The CYCA Aussie Challenge skippered by JARVIN overcame an unfortunate start when their rudder fell off their Zip 25 one-design in their opening flight against Matteo SIMONCELLI (ITA). However 18 year old JARVIN, holder of back to back Australian Youth Match Racing Championships, showed his obvious potential by coming back to win the next four matches. This included victories over ISAF World Sailing Rankings' number four and runner up here last year, Mathieu RICHARD (FRA) and Eugeny NEUGODNIKOV (RUS), who finished fourth in last year's ISAF Match Racing World Championship.

RICHARD, NEUGODNIKOV and SIMONCELLI all finished the day with a 3-2 record, whilst Denmark's Peter WIBROE is 2-3. Christopher RAST (SUI), in only his second ISAF Graded Match Racing event, is bottom of the leaderboard after ending the day 0-5.

Today should see the other group start their round robin flights. Last year's winner of the Cento Cup, Paolo CIAN (ITA) will be looking for a similar result to propel him back into the top ten of the ISAF World Match Race Rankings. Johnie BERNTSSON (SWE) and Andrew ARBUZOV (RUS), both in the top 20 of the ISAF World Match Race Rankings, will provide stiff competition, as will Australian Match Racing Champion, Michael DUNSTAN (AUS). As well as CIAN the home fans will have Roberto FERRARESE to cheer on, whilst 2000 Olympic gold medallist in the Finn, Iain PERCY (GBR), is here competing in only his third ISAF Graded Match Racing event.

1. Seve JARVIN (AUS) 4-1
2. Mathieu RICHARD (FRA) 3-2
2. Eugeny NEUGODNIKOV (RUS) 3-2
2. Matteo SIMONCELLI (ITA) 3-2
5. Peter WIBROE (DEN) 2-3
6. Christopher RAST (SUI) 0-5
