HARKEN International Youth Match Racing Championship 2005
Newport, Australia

An urgent warning from the Bureau of Meteorology of a severe thunderstorm with large hailstones approaching the Pittwater region saw racing curtailed at 1600 hours local time today in the ISAF Grade 3 HARKEN International Youth Match Racing series in Newport, Australia. After the curtailed day one, Australian Youth Match Racing Champion Hamish ROUGHLEY (AUS) holds the early lead.
The bulk of the storm eventually turned clear of the Pittwater race area but gave the competitors a good fresh water rinse off. Principal Race Officer Denis THOMPSON said, 'I had no choice but to come ashore as the forecast storm threatened.'

Nine flights were completed in light to moderate north to east winds which veered to the west as the storm approached. The Alfreds team of ROUGHLEY, John DAHLENBERG, Marty TREMBATH and Jeremy ROBERTS had a good day with six wins and two losses, though with some competitors having sailed only one match so far and with ten more flights remaining to complete the round robin, a more meaningful pattern should emerge tomorrow, when similar weather is again forecast with increased wind and another afternoon storm. The regatta continues till Sunday.

The regatta is fortunate to have a highly experienced on water management team including the bulk of the match racing group from the Sydney 2000 Olympics. The umpire team includes America's Cup umpires John WHITFIELD, Flavio CARSUGHI and David TALLIS and is led by Bill PRINGLE.

Young Josh JUNIOR (NZL) fell foul of the umpires when already carrying a pre-start penalty, he failed to take action to keep clear of the experienced Seve JARVIN (AUS) who established an overlap on the run eventually incurring two more penalties and a black flag.
