VII South American Games
Rio de Janeiro

Brazilians lead the championship in the Snipe, Lightning and Laser classes in the second day of races. Argentinians win the Mistral sailboards so far.
The VII South American Games are being held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 1-11 August 2002. Attracting sailors from 9 countries, the South American Games are a major multi-sport event for the region, including five separate events in the sailing regatta.

Originally scheduled to be held in Argentina, the Games was moved at fairly short notice to Brazil.

After 4 days of racing it is the host nation, Brazil, whose sailors are dominating in 3 of the 5 events and leading overall.

The opening day commenced with early morning rain on Copacabana Beach, followed by very strong north winds. The wind then decreased to 5 to 7 knots, before gradually increasing to 10 knots, with two races completed in each event. With four races constituting a series, the second day of racing saw the Lightning and Snipe finishing a further two races to have a valid championship. After 5 races, the discard will come into play.
