After five long days of spectacular racing in the waters surrounding Porto Cervo, the thirteenth edition of the Sardinia Cup comes to an end.

The event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda since 1978, is considered one of the most important world wide events raced in teams per nation. The prestigious trophy for the Sardinia Cup 2002, so kindly donated by His Royal Highness the Prince Aga Khan, President of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, has been awarded to the USA team formed from the Farr 40 one design "Bambakou" and "QQ7-Profit" (a Vismara IMS design). This title was last given to a US team in 1980.

The past five days of racing have been characterized by variable weather conditions (from a nice south-easterly wind to a strong westerly wind) which put the strengths of the athletes from the ten teams participating to the test.

During the week, eight races were completed, from windward/leeward courses to an island race, finally awarding the American John Coumantaros, driving his Farr 40 "Bambakou"- as is a rule by the one design class. Alongside is his team mate Roberto Maffini, who left his "QQ7-Profit" to the expert Luca Santella.

The team Italy Yellow had a good performance overall, finishing second in the final classifications, and third place for team North Sea, who had initially dominated the event. Second place for Italy Yellow was awarded thanks to the two good races, and victories of today, as both the "Giacomelli Sport" IMS and Farr 40 won today's race.
