Day 2

Races 2 & 3 were held on Wednesday in beautiful Punta del Este, Uruguay under near perfect conditions. The 11:00 morning start was postponed for lack of wind, but by 12 the wind started building and the competitors were sent out to the race course.

Race 2 began in 6-8 knots out of the ESE and flat seas. A windward-leeward course was set with offset marks and a gate at the bottom. The fleet spread across the course, but the left side seemed to pay with the current pushing to the mark. Argentines Lucas Gomez/Marcos Montanaro led with Uruguyans Diego Garcia/Martin Dovat 2nd, yesterdays winners Cristian/Alejandro Noe 3rd followed by Brazilians Alexandre/Eduardo Paradeda 4th. By the bottom leeward mark, many positions had changed with the Noe brothers leading, Luis Soubie/Granucci 2nd, Garcia/Dovat and Paradedas in line. As the wind shifted left, the course was changed and the fleet picked their sides. At the next weather mark, more changes in the top of the fleet with Noes, Garcia/Dovat, Fernando Rita/Javier Sintes of Spain and Bill Hardesty/Jon Rogers-of the USA and the Vasconcellos brothers of Brazil charging through the fleet. At the finish, Noe brothers crossed first followed by Hardesty/Rogers, Paradedas, Garcia/Dovat and Rita/Sintes rounding out the top 5.

Race 3

After the course was re-adjusted to the building breeze, the race was off after a recall under Z & I flags. The breeze shifted to the east and was about 10-12 knots, with a windward leeward course.

Uruguayans Santiago Silveira/Nicolas Shaban led the entire race and extended their lead throughout with the fleet changing positions behind them throughout the race. Brazilians Paradedas & Wanderley kept in the top until Wanderley hit the weather mark on the 2nd beat and had to do circles. Cubans Manso/Lorenzo moved near the Brazilians with Gomez/Montanaro close behind. Hardesty/Rogers climbed through the fleet again to keep a consistent score as did the Vasconcellos brothers, while 2-race winners Noe brothers struggled mid-fleet. Japanese sailors Takushima/Kangi stayed near the top to score a good finish. Finish positions: Silveira/Shaban, Paradedas, Manso/Lorenzo, Vasconcellos brothers, Hardesty/Rogers.

The jury flagged a few sailors for kinetics and circles were done. Several protests were filed with the results showing a few DSQs.

Day 3

Day 3 of the Snipe Worlds found changing weather patterns with a good breeze in the morning that dissolved by the time the competitors reached the race course. After an hour postponement, the breeze began to fill from the ESE at 10-12 knots. The anxious fleet had several recalls on race 4 prompting the flying of the Z & I flags. 5 boats were caught over at the start. Brazilians Paradedas were sailing well again leading to the weather mark and never looking back. They were followed by the Americans Hardesty/Rogers and the Cubans Manso/Lorenzo, with Wanderley/Zietemann charging from behind. The windward-leeward course was followed. At the finish, Paradedas , Wanderley/Zietmann, Funsch/Duffy hit a shift to cross, Manso/Lorenzo and Soubie/Granucci.

Race 5

With the breeze filling even more and shifting more to the east, clouds started rolling in signaling the coming storm of tonight. An Olympic course was given and several recalls under the Z flag again, catching 8 over early. The left side seemed to pay with more pressure and a clear path of breeze, and at the top mark, Cubans Manso/Lorenzo led, extending their lead away from the pack the entire time. Silveira/Shaban of Uruguay and the ever consistent Vasconcellos brothers of Brazil battled back and forth over the course of the regatta. On the 3rd leg, the wind shifted a little more left and positions changed by the leeward mark. The Paradedas were moving ahead followed closely by "the Brazilian navy" of Wanderley/Zietmann, Vasconcellos brothers and Fonseca/Duarte, with 4 Brazilian boats in a row. At the finish, Manso/Lorenzo crossed by 30 seconds, but have a Z -flag penalty, Vasconcellos brothers, Paradedas, Japanese sailors Takeshi Yoshioka/Shinsei Ueda and Fonseca/Duarte, caught twice on recalled starts.

Paella for 200 will be served at the YC Punta del Este followed by more entertainment at "Moby Dicks" bar across the street.

Tomorrow (Friday) is a lay day which may be needed due to the storm.
