On the 22nd July, Olivier de Kersauson's 110ft (34m) trimaran K2000 became the largest racing trimaran to be launched.
De Kersauson has commissioned the trimaran from designers Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost explicitly to tackle the Jules Verne Trophy and break his existing world record of 71 days 14 hours 18 minutes for the non-stop, crewed circumnavigation.
Sponsored by Cap Gemini; Ernst and Young; Schneider Electric the trimaran took 12 months to build at Gilles Ollier's Multiplast yard in Brittany, France where the catamarans Club Med and Innovation Explorer were created.
The main hull, floats and crossbeams are constructed from Nomex (honeycomb core) pre- impregnated carbon fibre, cured at 120°C.
The standing rigging is simple sloop design with retractable baby stay. The 130' (39m) fixed mast rotates on a titanium joint resting on the forward beam. The mast is a monolithic single skin structure fashioned out of carbon fibre. The boom is M46 carbon fibre.
K2000 is outfitted with three gennakers, a solent and a staysail fabricated out of cuben fibres all made by Incidences, France. The main sail is 4070'² / 378 m² fitted with three reefs. The solent is 2070'² / 192m². There are two sail lockers down below along with berths for 14 crew and two galleys.
Van Peteghem Lauriot Prévost (VPLP) have spent the past 20 years designing and testing trimarans. Numerous Formula 40's were produced in the 80's followed by the ORMA 60's in the 90's, 75' Poulain, and 90' Charal (later known as Lyonnaise des Eaux Dumez, and Sport Elec). The technology tried and tested on these racing machines was also applied to their range of luxury sailing catamarans such as the 138' Douce France (the largest sailing catamaran ever built).
Assisting the VPLP design team of Marc Van Petegham and Vincent Lauriot Prevost are structural engineers Hervé Devaux Structures (HDS). The rudder and daggerboards were designed by Michel Kermarec, aero-hydrodynamics specialist.
