Aegean Regatta
North East Aegean Sea

The last leg was from Mesta, Chios to Vathi Samos. George Andreadis’s “Atalanti IX”, the IMS optimized ILC, driven by his son Stratis that won the overall and the IMS Racer division of the Aegean Regatta, after an agonizing third leg.
In the ORC division the winner was the boat from Chios "Hurricane", with Pakis Aggelis as the helmsman.
Everybody thought that the 65 mile last leg from Mesta Chios to Vathi Samos would be a very easy downwind ride. The weather forecast was also quite optimistic as it announced for that territory winds in ranging from 15 to 25 knots. As it turned out, the local effects were not quite taken into account.

The start of the last leg was given with a 20 minutes delay, dew to problems the boat of the committee had in order to find a good spot to drop its anchor. Thought the leeward side was favored, as long as the course was concerned most of the fleet chose to start from the committee boat, where the wind was a bit stronger reaching 8 knots, and a bit stronger too. It was a windward start, with light genoas. First out of the line was the red boat from Thesalonika, "Ellinis", which from the beginning seemed very aggressive, probably thanks to their very good performance in the second leg.

The spinnakers did not make their appearance, until after the first 8 miles. "Atalanti IX" had gained the lead after a conservative start and was "steaming" comfortably at speeds that were usually more then 10 knots, as the wind had picked up to 14 knots. Both, "Atalanti IX" and "Ellinis" were trying to keep to the right hand side of the course from where they were expecting the wind. The ILC 40 "Anemos", which is known for its downwind performance was comfortably keeping up with the pace.

The IMX 38s, taking advantage of their huge masthead kites, chose to "dive" early and stay close to the land. The problems started to appear about 2 hours after the start. The wind, close to Venetiko island started to die. The leaders were calmed in a lull and the rest of the fleet started to catch up with them. "Anemos" had chosen to stay close to Chios, "Atalanti IX" chose to "play" with the puffs and try to avoid the lulls in the middle and "Ellinis" chose to head up to Ikaria, 90 degrees away from the course. "Erytos Lancia Lybra" and "Alpha Bank Notos" chose the third option as well. In the beginning it seemed that they were right, as they were still moving when everyone's else's sails were flapping. But in the end of the day the wind came from the Turkish coast, between the channel of Chios and Oinousses.

Though "Anemos" was first to take the change, he could not cover the distance from "Atalante IX" that for the third consecutive time took line honors and was placed second overall. It was the X-412 "Aeolos", driven by Nick Siailos that won the IMS overall standings for the day. "Alpha Bank Notos" having won two 1st places in the last regattas was very reasonably optimistic for reaching a place in the podium. The 14th place at the last leg deprived him of that chance and he was left in the 4th position in the overall standings. The IMX 38 "Erytos-Lancia Lybra" after a poor finish on the 3rd leg slipped from second to 3rd position. His place was taken by "Ellinis' who managed to save herself from what for the boats that followed her was a disastrous tactical decision. It was "Atalanti IX" with two 3rds and one 2nd managed to win the first place in the IMS Overall standings of the Aegean Regatta, and in the IMS Racer division.

In the IMS Cruiser Racer, the duel between J. Lambrianides "Koursaros" an X-372 and the Dufour Trophy 334 "Vana Violeta" of George Sykaris ended in favor of the first boat.

In the ORC fleet the battle for the 1st place was a very hard one, with only two regattas counting for the overall. It was "Calypso II" with George Pittos that won but the overall went to the local boat (from Chios) Hurricane!
The Aegean Regatta finished with the prize giving ceremony in Vathi, Samos, where the minister of the Aegean presented the prizes to the winners. A reception that followed was a very good opportunity for owners to arrange next years' participation.
