Employer Costs for Wages and Benefits and Changes in CostsThe Employment Cost Index (ECI) component of the National Compensation Survey (NCS) is a Principal Federal Economic Indicator that measures changes in labor costs. Average hourly costs for employee compensation is presented in the Employer Costs for Employee Compensation (ECEC) series.

Who has benefits and how do benefits work?The NCS also provides benefits incidence data on the percentage of workers with access to and participating in employer provided benefit plans. The survey covers a broad range of benefits including holidays and vacations, sick leave, health and life insurance, and retirement plans. Details of employer-provided health and retirement plan provisions are also provided.

Retirement benefits available to 66 percent of private industry workers in March 2015

Retirement benefit access for private workers ranged from 31 percent for the lowest 10 percent of wage earners to 88 percent for the highest 10 percent. Nonunion workers paid 22 percent of single coverage medical premiums and union workers paid 13 percent.

Compensation costs little changed at 0.2% Mar-Jun 2015 and 2.0% over the year ending June

Compensation costs little changed at 0.2 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from March to June 2015. Over the year, compensation rose 2.0 percent, wages and salaries up 2.1 percent, and benefits rose 1.8 percent.

In March private employers spend $2.43 per hour worked for employee health benefits

Private employers spent an average of $31.65 per hour worked for compensation in March 2015. Health insurance was the largest individual employer benefit cost at $2.43, accounting for 7.7 percent of total compensation costs.
