Eight days of exceptional racing were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with a range of sailing conditions putting the sailors and organisers to the test. For many sailors, the Olympic test event is their major regatta in the third year of the Olympic cycle. 104 races were held across the six racing areas with 19 nations claiming a medal, highlighting the spread of worldwide sailing talent.

ISAF, the Rio 2016 Organising Committee (Rio 2016), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the Brazilian Government, Rio State Environment Institute (INEA) and State Environment Agency (SEA) are all working together to prepare for Rio 2016, and Brazilian authorities are working to guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) to ensure a safe and fair field of play for the athletes.

Throughout the test event, ISAF worked closely with Rio 2016 sustainability and the local government to ensure the racing areas were safe for fair competition. On 21 August the Men's and Women's 470 fleets were moved from the Ponte course to Niteroi due to objects in the water. With no breeze on the Niteroi course, the decision was made to sail on the Escola Naval course where one good, fair race, was conducted. The 2015 test event saw the addition of a new race course, enabling ISAF greater flexibility. All six racing areas, three inside and three outside of Guanabara Bay were used and tested throughout the week.

The health and welfare of the athletes is a top priority for the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), Rio 2016 Organising Committee (Rio 2016) and International Olympic Committee (IOC). Water quality is an important aspect at all Olympic Games and is regularly addressed between ISAF, the IOC and the Rio authorities.

Following the 2015 test event there have been many positive comments from the sailors about the conditions for competition.

The Rio organizers' focus has remained on delivering excellent sporting competitions for sailing. While work remains to be done, ISAF, Rio 2016 and all relevant local authorities are confident that the venue will be ready to host 380 sailors during the Olympic Sailing Competition in one year's time.

ISAF continues to support and track all activities related to improving the water conditions in the competition areas. We are working with our partners to ensure fair sailing and that the Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition is a fantastic event for athletes, spectators and TV viewers.

Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition

The Rio 2016 Olympic Sailing Competition will take place at the Marina da Glória, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and will feature 380 athletes competing across ten events.

Racing is scheduled to take place from 8-18 August 2016 and the competition format for all events is fleet racing.
