Varvassi Wreck Trip Boosts Sailing Skills

Saturday 21 March saw sixteen berth holders from Premier’s Solent marinas enjoy a high-speed RIB trip to the Varvassi Wreck as part of the RYA Active Marina programme.

Led by Russell Lake, an RYA approved instructor from Urban Truant Sea School, the afternoon activity was an opportunity for those participating in the Round the Island Race to learn how to navigate the hazards and achieve a plan for a practical strategy during the race. It was also a fantastic chance for skippers who had an interest in viewing the hazards close up.

The two RIBS set off at 2pm after a short briefing and participants got to view the race starting and holding areas, as well as transit the official start line and take notes; using a chart plotter to gain an accurate understanding of the wreck’s location and determine how much of it will be exposed on the day of the race. There was even time to stop off at Yarmouth for a coffee to recap and swap tips, as well as share knowledge with fellow skippers.

Participant, Chris Young was very pleased with the outcome of the day: “Russell and all the team were very helpful and informative and know the 'tricks of the trade' in getting the most out of the race. Seeing the rarely visible Varvassi wreck has clarified where I will round the Needles! That and tea in Yarmouth really was a bonus.”

Fergus Anderson, Active Marina Coordinator who attended the afternoon, added: “It was a great experience and something I had wanted to do for many years, even as a race veteran. The proximity to the hazard that being in a RIB allows you to get and the speed at which you can gather this real information made this a hugely beneficial and unforgettable experience”.

Russell from Urban Truant concluded that the activity will have positive effects on future plans: “This proved a very rewarding day and the feedback will allow us to tailor our future activities and courses to the needs of Premier Marinas berth holders.”
