Schenker 49er European Championship 2005

Chris DRAPER and Simon HISCOCKS (GBR) proved that consistency is the key as they moved to the top of the leaderboard after the first day of races in the final series at the ISAF Grade C1 Schenker 49er European Championship in Vallensbæk, Denmark. The number one team in the ISAF World Sailing Rankings scored four top three finishes to open up a three point gap at the head of the leaderboard
After the eight race qualifying series, the teams were split into gold and silver fleets and carried their final placing through to count as their first result in the final series, a score which cannot be discarded. DRAPER and HISCOCKS finished the qualifying series in third and added finishes of 3,2,2,3 to that yesterday to head the leaderboard on 13 points. A second place and a bullet gave MORRISON and RHODES the early lead before a fifth and sixth place saw them overtaken by their British team mates.
MARTINEZ and FERNANDEZ started the series with an eighth and six place and then ominously scored bullets in the day's two final races to go someway towards making up for a disappointing twelfth place in the qualifying series. A win in the opening race helped Morgan LARSON and Pete SPAULDING (USA) to fourth place overall. Qualifying series winners Pietro SIBELLO and Gianfranco SIBELLO (ITA) did not fare as well yesterday and now lie eighth overall.
In the 29er European Championship taking place simultaneously, Britain also holds the two top spots thanks to Ed CHAPMAN and Tom PEEL and Dylan FLETCHER and Nick HOLLIS, whilst Finland's Silja LEHTINEN and Lauri LEHTINEN lie third.
