The mystery of Paradise Harbour at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 2015

RYA Bob the Buoy

Hundreds of young visitors to this year’s RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show cracked the show’s first ever fictional marine crime scene investigation into pollution in Paradise Harbour! The Green Blue’s interactive display featured four scenarios around marine litter, invasive non-native species, an oil spill and pollution from cleaning products that contain harmful chemicals.

With six suspects already identified and mug shots on show, it was up to the young detectives to solve each of the four cases and match suspects with the evidence – all with a helping hand from the RYA Junior Youth Mascot Bob the Buoy. Tasks involved unscrambling photographic puzzles to spot litter that had blown overboard, and matching fingerprints taken from a leaky oil can that had been left on the slipway.

Youngsters also had the chance to perform chemical tests to decipher the pH levels of water samples taken from suspects’ boats; how acidic or alkaline everyday products used on board can be and the effect this has on the marine environment. And last but not least, young detectives came face to face with a selection of marine alien species found here in the UK and tasked with finding out how they arrived in Paradise Harbour! Along with photographic evidence the display featured the ‘infamous five’ – Leathery sea squirt, Wakame, Wireweed, Slipper Limpet and Zebra Mussel – all preserved in resin and on loan thanks to the support from the Cornwall Wildlife Trust.
