Inspired Facilities for Ulley and Otley

The latest Sport England distribution of Inspired Facilities funding includes £50k each for Otley SC and Ulley SC. A fantastic achievement for both clubs.

Ulley Sailing Club near Rotherham in South Yorkshire and Otley Sailing Club near Leeds have each secured Olympic legacy funding to the tune of £50,000 from Sport England’s Inspired Facilities fund.

To date, more than 1,300 local sports projects across the country have now received National Lottery funding through Inspired Facilities, part of the Sport England Olympic and Paralympic legacy programme.Sport England today announced an extra £40million would be available to extend the Inspired Facilities fund to 2017.

Ulley Sailing Club has secured the £50,000 (the maximum grant) from Sport England to make internal alterations and refurbishments to the council-owned centre building at Ulley Country Park, the home of the club since its inauguration in 1972. The project objective is to refresh the building and deliver a more flexible layout, making it more user-friendly and welcoming for all community and school users, not just the sailing club.

“Sport England’s award of £50,000 is fantastic news for the club, the council and all members of our local community who use the building" said Club Commodore David Holt. "Everyone knows that local authority budgets are currently stretched to the limit and we are delighted to be able to help to restore the building to a layout and condition that will attract many more sailors and community users in future."

"Following so soon after the club reached the final round of the prestigious RYA Club of the Year Award in March, this is a huge boost for us," continued Club Commodore, David Holt. "I would like to thank all the club members who have put so much effort into bringing the club back from the brink of closure to its healthy position today."

At Otley Sailing Club, the £50,000 (again, the maximum grant) will be used to make extensive alterations to the Clubhouse, making it even more accessible for disabled users.

"The award is fantastic news for the club," said Peter Fox, Otley Sailing Club's RYA Sailability Co-ordinator. "We will be creating better disabled facilities and integrating them into the entire clubhouse. We are already an RYA Sailability "Centre of Excellence" and we plan to build upon our 25 years of experience to make our sailing centre as inclusive as possible."

"I am extremely pleased that Otley Sailing Club is going to benefit from Olympic legacy funding," said local MP, Greg Mulholland. "The award is great news for the inclusivity of the sport of sailing and the improved facilities will build on the club's successful "Sail Free" programme and will maintain the proud history of the Club."

"Sport England’s Chair, Nick Bitel, said: “A year on from the Olympics, this National Lottery investment is helping us deliver a lasting sporting legacy in South Yorkshire. With investment now on offer from our Inspired Facilities Fund until 2017, we look forward to supporting many more sports clubs in the region who play such a vital role in grassroots sport."
