Introduction to RYA Shore Based (Theory) Courses

In some aspects of life, it is not necessary to have any theoretical training. Many things come almost naturally and can be practiced until perfected. The practical side of sailing can be like this.

However, there is more to sailing than simply catching the wind! Some elements are better learned from books, explanation, and theoretical exercises. Buoyage, Collision Regulations (IRPCS), safety at sea, meteorology, navigational chart work and tidal calculations are just a few of these elements.

Putting to sea with a lack of knowledge of these theory topics is potentially dangerous, and at Miramar Sailing School we strongly recommend you take the time to learn them before putting yourself, your vessel and others at risk.

Shore Based courses are available in two forms: Classroom tuition in our open air terrace classroom with views across the hills of Antigua, or Online Home Study. Our school offers both.
