Getting used to life in Estonia

Written by Andrea Brewster  | 07 June 2010

I arrived in Tallinn in Estonia on Tuesday night. The first thing I noticed was how light it still was at 9pm. The sun doesn’t set till about 11pm and comes back up again about 4am.

This has made is quite difficult to get to sleep at a reasonable hour as I am just not used to it being so light so late. On the plus side the sun sets have been amazing and they last for ages! The area is surrounded by trees which is not at all what I was expecting, I thought Estonia would be all concrete buildings but it's actually a really beautiful country.  The hotel I’m staying in is virtually right on site. It was originally built as the athlete accommodation for the 1980 Olympics and is now a hotel and a spa where you can get 16 types of massage and treatments which include wine baths and chocolate body wraps! The majority of competitors are staying at the hotel so the lobby and hallways are full of sailors on their laptops, probably writing their own blogs or on facebook! So far there has been a range of conditions to practise in, one day of moderate, one day of light and one day of windy. It has also either been super shifty or super stable and the sea state is flat one day and steep chop the next. I usually do my best in regattas with a range of conditions so I’m hoping that this event will suit me!  The event starts tomorrow so I am taking today off. I am planning on doing a little bit of tourist stuff, maybe go and look around the old town in Tallinn and have a coffee in one of the many cafes in the town square.
