Tom Squires wins second Spring Series

Perfect conditions for second Spring Series regatta

Tom Squires wins consecutive RYA Olympic Classes Spring Series event at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy over the weekend (11-12 April).

The morning rain clouds parted as sailors launched on Saturday morning leaving behind a beautiful sunny, although cold, weekend of racing for the Olympic and Paralympic Classes. A full schedule of races was completed before the rain clouds returned on Sunday afternoon.

Following his win at the first RS:X 9.5 Spring Series event in March, Tom Squires, once again showed impeccable form winning all eight races over the weekend and the event, nine points ahead of team mate Joe Bennett. Following on from a win at the RYA Youth Nationals, Emma Wilson continued her fine form to finishing ahead of the other girls in the RS:X 8.5 class.

Rory Hunter and Neil Hunter, sailing the 49er, put together a consistent set of top three results over the nine race series to top the leader board. Chris Taylor and Sam Batten were also in the mix finishing second. Owen Bowerman and Morgan Peach led the 49erFX group ahead of Gillies Munro and Daniel Harris.

Taking top honours in the Finn class was Ben Cornish, improving on his fourth place finish at the first Spring Series last month.

Four race wins for Amy Seabright and Anna Carpenter in the 470 mixed fleet was just enough to finish one point ahead of Ben Hazeldine and Rhos Hawes.

In the Paralympic fleets, David Hawkins won the 2.4mR, while Alex Hovden and Carol Dugdale’s perfect score line put them at the top of the SKUD class.

The third and Final Spring Series event will be held at Weymouth and Portland Nationals Sailing Academy, 16-17 May.
