London 2012 – One Year On…

Written by RYA | 19 July 2013

As we near the 2012 Olympic Anniversary, our sailors share their personal Games moments - you can share yours too to be in with the chance to win some great prizes!

On 27 July 2012, the eyes of the world were fixed on Great Britain as the London Olympic Opening Ceremony got underway, setting the scene for a two-week festival of Olympic sport which inspired a generation.

In Weymouth and Portland, Britain’s sailors played their part in the record British medal tally, with Ben Ainslie grinding out an historic fourth gold medal to surpass Paul Elvstrom and become the greatest Olympic sailor of all time, while Iain Percy and Andrew Simpson, Nick Dempsey, Luke Patience and Stuart Bithell, and Hannah Mills and Saskia Clark all claimed silver medals in front of thousands of jubilant spectators at the Nothe Gardens.

One year on from the Olympic cauldron being lit, we’ve caught up with members of our London 2012 Olympic team who reflect on their 2012 experiences, how they themselves were inspired by the Games, and on life and sailing since the Olympic flame went out in London and the focus switched to the Road to Rio 2016.

We’ll also hear from RYA Olympic Manager Stephen Park on his roadmap to Rio glory, and the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for the British Sailing Team in this new Olympic cycle.

Check out our #2012inspired sailor blogs running all next week at www.britishsailingteam.com as we celebrate the build up to the Games Anniversary on 27 July.

We also want to hear from you with your own #2012inspired stories – were you there in Weymouth and Portland watching our team sail for gold?  Were you volunteering, or cheering on other British sporting success..?  Or did the Games motivate and inspire you to reach your own personal best – or even try something completely new..?

Keep an eye on the British Sailing Team’s Facebook page from Monday 22 July – we’ll be asking you to share your #2012inspired stories to be in with the chance to win some great prizes!
