Lake Como provides challenging Europeans for British catamaran crews

Britain’s Nacra 17 crews will chalk their first European Championship up as a learning experience after a testing week at the Italian Lake Como venue (20-24 August).

The 2008 Olympic gold medallist Pippa Wilson and John Gimson were the British Sailing Team’s highest-placed crew, finishing 12th as Europeans (13th overall) at the conclusion of the five-day regatta for the new Olympic catamaran class, held in Dervio, which served up a range of wind conditions throughout the event.

Wilson and Gimson, who also placed 12th at last month’s World Championships in the Netherlands, finished their event on a high with a race win in the 12th race of the series, but it wasn’t enough to elevate them into the top ten positions for Saturday’s medal racing, where the Dutch pairing of Mandy Mulder and Coen de Koning claimed the European crown.

Podium Potential pairing Rupert White and Nikki Boniface finished 16th overall (15th Europeans) with the scratch team of Lucy Macgregor and Tim Carter in 18th (17th Europeans).

Two premature starts, a disqualification and a rudder breakage put paid to Ben Saxton and Hannah Diamond’s hopes of repeating their World Championship podium success at the European Championships, and they finished the event in 21st overall (20th Europeans).
