Enter now for the opening event of the RYA Olympic Classes Spring Series at WPNSA

The domestic Olympic Classes racing season is set to get underway with entries now open for the RYA Olympic Classes Spring Series events for 2013.

The first of the three-weekend events will be held from 9-10 March at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, and will see racing in the Finn, 470 Men and Women, 49er, 49erFX, RSX 9.5 men and 8.5 open, 2.4mR, SKUD and Sonar.

The annual early-season Spring Series event provides a focus for new and aspiring talents and is compulsory for all Skandia Team GBR Development and Transition Squad members. It is also expected that a handful of high profile, world class British teams will be attending therefore providing a highly competitive and exciting racing environment. The event also provides the chance for younger sailors to pit their skills against the nation’s best in Olympic class boats.

The second event of the Spring Series will also take place at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy from 13-14 April with the finale being hosted by Hayling Island Sailing Club on the 18-19 May.

Barrie Edgington, Skandia Team GBR Development Squad Manager, commented: “The Spring Series marks the start of the 2013 racing season and is a great way to brush off the winter cobwebs against some quality domestic competition.

“The Series offers sailors the opportunity to compete on the waters of the London 2012 Olympic Games and Hayling Bay and will be used as qualifiers for a whole host of international grants making these events a must for anyone looking to attend the key European World Cups and Eurolymp events as well as Olympic Class International Championships.”

Edgington concluded: “The first event is always an exciting start to the season as we usually see how the winter training has worked out for the keen sailors in advance of the international regatta programme and whether any new teams are ready to challenge the ‘old guard’ so to speak.”

Entries are now being accepted online for both WPNSA weekends at RYA Racing Events website with early bird prices available if you enter online by Monday 4th March for the first weekend and Monday 8th April for the second weekend. For the Hayling Island SC event, entries will be taken at registration.

The Spring Series Notice of Race can also be found in the RYA Olympic Classes Handbook, which is available from the Crew Room section of the Skandia Team GBR website. This also contains information regarding the applicable class for each weekend, key class dates and the series of qualifiers for grants.

The Handbook also includes regatta details for all Olympic and Paralympic Classes, grant eligibility for both squad and non-squad sailors, and squad selection criteria for Skandia Team GBR.
