British crews set for first ever Nacra 17 Europeans at Lake Como

British sailors in the new Olympic catamaran class will hope to follow World Championship success with European silverware at next week’s inaugural Nacra 17 European Championship in Lake Como, Italy (20-24 August).

Ben Saxton and Hannah Diamond claimed silver at the first World Championship in the new class at the Dutch venue of The Hague last month, and will line up once more with fellow Worlds medallists Billy Besson-Marie Riou (France) and Mathias Buhler and Nathalie Brugger (Switzerland) and some 40 other mixed crews in the bid for European honours in this first season for the new multihull class.

The 2008 Olympic gold medallist Pippa Wilson and crew John Gimson will also be in action, aiming to build on their 12th place at the World Championship, while Lucy Macgregor, 11th at the Worlds, will be sailing with Tim Carter for the five-day Europeans at Dervia, on the eastern shore of the picturesque Lake Como.

The British Sailing Team line-up is completed by the Podium Potential pairing of Rupert White – whose late grandfather Reg took Britain’s only Olympic multihull gold medal to date with John Osborn in 1976 – competing with Nikki Boniface.

A provisional 16 races are scheduled across the five days of competition, which kicks off on Tuesday 20 August and concludes with the final medal race on Saturday 24 August.
