Bryony Shaw returns to the scene of her 2008 bronze triumph in a bid for World Cup glory

Bryony Shaw admits she’ll have fond memories of her 2008 Olympic bronze medal triumph when she returns to the waters of Qingdao, China, this week for the first time since her podium finish at the Beijing Games.

RS:X windsurfer Shaw will be the only British sailor to compete at the Qingdao leg of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series when it starts on Monday 14 October, with 131 sailors set to compete across six Olympic classes.

Shaw, the world number one, has claimed podium finishes in all but one of the nine regattas she’s contested this season, including a first ever RS:X World Championship medal – a silver at Buzios in March.

She’ll be joined in Qingdao by Hong Kong’s world number four Chan Hei Man and Israeli world bronze medallist Maayan Davidovich, plus 16 Chinese windsurfers in a bid for World Cup windsurfing success at this first event of the new 2013/2014 series.

“Qingdao’s a fantastic place and we were really well hosted when we went there.  I’ve got good memories of my bronze medal!” the 30-year-old Shaw explained.

“It’ll be strange to see it five years on and see if it’s changed or developed any more, and also with the event being out of season hopefully we’ll get some breeze!”

Qingdao’s Olympic Sailing Centre will also host racing in the men's and women's 470, the Laser, Laser Radial and men’s RS:X with 180,000USD prize money up for grabs across the fleets.

Racing commences on Monday 14 October at 1200 (local) with a two-day qualification series, followed by a three-day Final Series and a final day of Medal Racing.
