Top GBR windsurfers ready for action in Brazil

Olympic silver medallist Nick Dempsey will be vying for a second podium finish of the year when he takes to Brazilian waters for the RS:X World Windsurfing Championships, starting in Buzios on Saturday (2 March).

The 32-year-old claimed silver amid an experimental race format at the ISAF Sailing World Cup regatta in Miami in January – his first event back after his 2012 Olympic success – and has since spent three weeks at the Brazilian World Championship venue in Buzios re-familiarising himself with the training demands of Olympic windsurfing after the discipline received its 2016 reprieve at the expense of kiteboarding at the end of last year.

“It will be difficult to win the Worlds, but not impossible,” admitted Dempsey, who won the RS:X world title in 2009 and claimed silver at the 2012 Worlds in Cadiz, Spain.

“It’s likely to be very windy and we aren’t expecting a range of conditions, but you always find something extra at a Worlds.

“Right now it’s just about being out on my board again and really starting to look ahead at what the next three-and-a-half years can bring.”

Joining Dempsey for the Buzios event will be fellow Skandia Team GBR talents Elliot Carney and Tom Squires in the men’s fleet, with Beijing Olympic bronze medallist Bryony Shaw and Izzy Hamilton, the 2012 RS:X Under 21 European Champion, looking to challenge in the women’s fleet.

Racing at RS:X World Windsurfing Championships runs from Saturday 2 March with the final medal races for both men and women on Wednesday 6 March.
