Disappointment for Alison Young in China

The British Sailing Team had a disappointing end to the 2013 Laser Radial World Championship with illness bringing Alison Young’s regatta to a halt on the final day of racing in Rizhao, China (Monday 7 October).

The London 2012 Olympian, who was due to start the final day of racing in fifth place and with it all to play for, was unable to take to the waters of Wanpingkou to complete the final two races of the regatta after being struck down by illness on Sunday’s penultimate day.

With the aim to do one better than her fourth place at last year’s event and hoping to carry on the momentum from her European bronze in Dublin last month, Young opened her regatta with an impressive second place finish followed by a number of top ten results across the 10 of 12 races she completed.

Battling against the best of best which included the host’s Olympic Champion Lijia Xu, 2012 silver medallist Marit Bouwmeester and European Champion Annalise Murphy, the British sailor finished 17th overall after today’s final day frustration of missing out on the chance to challenge for the podium positions.

Event victory went to Croatia’s Tina Mihelic, second place went to Tuula Tenkanen from Finland while American Paige Riley took the final step of the podium in third.

The British Sailing Team’s Chloe Martin rounded her Championships off in fine form recording her highest placed finish of the regatta with a fifth to finish 24th overall. British Sailing Team Podium Potential squad member Hannah Snellgrove finished 28th while Georgina Povall finished sixth in the silver fleet, 45th overall.
