WPNSA to hold fourth stage of the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup

The RYA, in conjunction with the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy and the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), is pleased to confirm that the Weymouth and Portland leg of the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup will take place from the 8 -14 June 2015.

Returning to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic waters, the ISAF Sailing World Cup Weymouth and Portland will be the fourth stage of the six-leg revamped elite series. Racing will be conducted over five days with the fifth day of racing deciding who will take home the medals in a spectacular Medal Race day format for all classes.

Weymouth and Portland will join Hyeres, France, as the other European venue and will add to the 2015 ISAF Sailing World Cup line-up which kicks off in Melbourne, Australia in December 2014 before visiting Miami, USA in January 2015.  With the best Olympic classes sailors competing for a place at the Final in Abu Dhabi in November 2015, the stage is set for intense racing.

John Derbyshire, RYA Racing Manager and Performance Director, commented: “Early confirmation of the event dates for 2015 helps everyone to start planning and preparing. This is especially important for overseas competitors and the teams of volunteers, both ashore and afloat, required to help support such an elite event. Whilst the ISAF Sailing World Cup will not be coming to UK shores for another nine months it’s vital to start getting the pieces in place for us to be able to provide a quality run event that seamlessly fits into the rest of the ISAF Sailing World Cup series.

“Any major event in the UK is an excellent opportunity to provide our amazingly committed volunteers and race officials the opportunity to work at the highest level. An added bonus to this is that they take the knowledge, the skills gained and their enthusiasm back to their sailing clubs around the country which has a knock on effect of improving the health and vitality of the sport around the country.

“With some of the world’s best sailors competing throughout the ISAF Sailing World Cup series, including many of our British Sailing Team members, it is important that we offer them the best stage to perform on!”
