Equestrian, as we know it, has been part of the Olympic programme since the Games in Stockholm in 1912 and is the only Olympic sport where men and women compete against each other. Para-equestrian dressage has been included in the Paralympic Games since Atlanta in 1996.

The FEI disciplines (dressage, driving, eventing, endurance, para-equestrian dressage, reining, showjumping, vaulting) all compete in World and European Championships. A European Championship happens every other year (occuring the year after an Olympic Games), with the World Equestrian Games (which sees all FEI disciplines compete at the same event) sandwiched in between these Europeans. The non-Olympic FEI disciplines compete at a discipline specific World Championships in the year when an Olympic Games takes place.
