Storyline
At the peak of her international career, Maria Enders is asked to perform in a revival of the play that made her famous twenty years ago. But back then she played the role of Sigrid, an alluring young girl who disarms and eventually drives her boss Helena to suicide. Now she is being asked to step into the other role, that of the older Helena. She departs with her assistant to rehearse in Sils Maria; a remote region of the Alps. A young Hollywood starlet with a penchant for scandal is to take on the role of Sigrid, and maria finds herself on the other side of the mirror, face to face with an ambiguously charming woman who is, in essence, an unsettling reflection of herself. Fears are daily companion in our lives, just how to take solace? How to confront the fears, some hire a therapist, others deepen in the books and many take a break and go to the mountains. This movie is not for everyone. Many believe even dull, but we can not just generalize everything. Olivier Assayas film Clouds of Sils Maria is hungry for viewers, watching movies a little differently, because this one is strange in many ways. More personal and multi-faceted. The location chosen in Switzerland, Alps, is fascinating and the nature, scenography is therefore representative. The writing and choreography is really well made and it gives you the aha moment at its peak, just for that it is worth watching. Who does not know the Mountains as the phallus or a culmination of hidden patterns, represents actress Binoche role and there character. I think she played solid, because it was perfectly written/suited to her way of acting. But not completely satisfied. Dialogues between the two main actresses are sometimes absent. It is also interesting that Stewart transformation is not specific. Although the actress is quite limited in emotional responding in this flick she shows a greater depth. Stewart with glasses is a go... :) Worth mentioning Grace Moretz, we can see the Kick-ass teenager, who has now turned into a glamorous diva. Who is that assistant fresh face Claire Tran, need to see her more.
Is it a superb masterpiece? It is not...but a magnificent work, done from the depts of the heart.
