Jowan never gives up!
This young man is aiming for a bright sailing future
Jowan Hewitt is just eight years old, and learnt to sail a year ago through OnBoard at Camel Sailing and Powerboat Centre. He was always very keen and was desperate to helm a boat by himself even though, in his group everyone was older than him. He’s had a brilliant year.
He proved how keen he was by taking out one of the centre’s Laser Picos regularly in training activities and races, so his parents bought him a Tera. His first race was Junior Camel Week, the local junior regatta, in which he was the youngest participant. He was delighted he managed to hold his own just below the mid-table area. He then continued to participate in club races and Bart’s Bash and most recently, he competed in the centre’s Frostbite Series, hosted by Rock Sailing and Water Sports Club where he was voted, without any doubt, the person who tried the hardest and never gave up. He finished one place off the top three in his age category out of ten entries.
Jowan’s parents are extremely proud of his efforts and are delighted that he has found a sport that he has really taken to. He wants to do it whatever the weather, even though he has taken some knocks (literally) on the way, and has never given up.
He has learned to sail with Centre Principal and Chief Instructor Mark Stacey, along with staff members Matt Chaplin and Laura Vinton who also came through the OnBoard scheme. Mark says: “I think Jowan has the potential to do very well, but most of all he loves his sailing. It’s the smile he gives when everything goes well - to see his face when he received his trophy was brilliant. He deserved the award for all his effort in a short space of time and I hope to see him having a good season sailing his RS Tera.”
