Iron is a key component of haemoglobin, the substance in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs throughout the body. Athletes who carry out long periods of intense activity can often experience ‘Iron drain’ resulting in low haemoglobin levels. Although there is often a perception that only women of a childbearing age have a risk of sub optimal iron status, all athletes and particularly those who participate in endurance events or have a high and prolonged training intensity need to consider supplementing with iron. 

Each Iron Complex tablet contains 14mg in the ‘stomach friendly’ bisglycinate form. Other forms of iron are often associated with side effects such as nausea and constipation, iron bisglycinate helps to prevent some of these common side effects.

Each tablet also provides vitamin C and copper which aid the absorption and transportation of iron throughout the body. Vitamin C acts as a reducing agent, keeping iron in its reduced and absorbable form. Copper is required for iron transport to the bone marrow for red blood cell formation and prevents iron accumulating in the tissues. 

Vitamins B2, B6 and B12 are included for the role they play in the normal formation of red blood cells and complete this advanced formulation.

Product Origins

The iron in our complex is in the highly superior bisglycinate form. This is a true protein iron complex as the iron is bound to an amino acid. The manufacturing process involves reacting iron (in a pure powder form) with glycine in an aqueous environment whist carefully controlling the pH through the addition of citric acid. The iron bonds with the carboxylic acid and neutral amino group to form iron bisglycinate.

Our ferrous bisglycinate is ionically neutral and hence carries no electrical charge. This makes it highly absorbable as it doesn’t react with other dietary factors in the stomach to form non-absorbable compounds. This property, combined with the low-molecular weight of iron bisglycinate, means that the stomach does not have to work hard to absorb this form of iron and it can pass easily through the intestinal wall. Some inferior forms of iron, as used by other supplement manufacturers, can actually deactivate nutrients such as vitamins E and C and block the absorption of other minerals such as calcium. This leads to undesirable digestive distress and free-radical problems.
