School Games - Inclusive Sailing 

Inclusive indoor and outdoor sailing programme for schools, aimed at SEND and non SEND pupils who cannot easily access mainstream sailing competition.

The Sainsbury’s School Games have been created to motivate and enthuse more school pupils to have a go at sport competition in school.  As part of this programme the Inclusive School Games are taking place at mainstream schools around the country to enable special education needs/disabled (SEND) and non-SEND pupils to compete against each other in sport.

Inclusive Indoor Sailing (at Levels 1 and 2) takes place in a sports hall and is based on a real sailing race, just without the water.  The Inclusive Outdoor Sailing scheme (Level 3) is an ideal water based sailing activity that teams can to take part in to further their indoor sailing knowledge, this time on the water at a local club.

Indoor Sailing (Levels 1 and 2)

The RYA has combined forces with the Youth Sport Trust to produce Indoor Sailing inclusive competition formats, as part of the Sainsbury’s School Games.    The RYA, the Youth Sport Trust, Woodlands Community Special School and Copleston High School have worked together on the formats to ensure all young people, regardless of ability, are able to take part in school competitions. The schools are leads in delivering Project Ability – part of the School Games that is designed to help drive and increase opportunities for young disabled people.   Indoor Sailing involves teams of pupils competing against each other to complete a course that is laid out in a sports hall, using equipment such as cones, mats, benches, ropes and chairs.  To simulate sailing, the course will teach pupils about wind direction and sailing techniques, whilst allowing the teams to compete using skills used in every day school activity.    The Sainsbury’s School Games competition cards (available to download on the right hand side of this page) and Level 1 & 2  film have been produced to help you find out more about taking part, and provide support for teachers and volunteers in schools. Outdoor Sailing (Level 3)

So you have had a go at Indoor Sailing and would like to have a go on the water. The RYA has the resources to help you get started. The downloads to the right of the page have all the information you need to set up the game on the water, providing a fantastic way for pupils to experience sailing in a safe and fun learning environment.
