Courses and Training

YDSA has members from many and varied backgrounds and encourages those who are thinking of surveying as a career to consider their existing knowledge and how they may enhance this in order to become a knowledgeable yacht surveyor.

YDSA believes that practical experience is paramount and can be gained in different ways - such as working in a build or repair yard; or perhaps in charge of the maintenance of a charter fleet. Added to this you will need to have underpinning knowledge of construction materials and methods, fixings and fastenings, systems, etc.

Surveying with the YDSA / Report Writing

YDSA is keen to ensure applicants and current members maintain and develop their surveying skills and knowledge and to this end a range of training days are offered during the year - both practical and classroom. We will also provide insight into the philosophy of the YDSA at these one-day trainings. Report Writing is seen by the committee as a key feature of surveyors' training and all members are invited to attend - even those who have been members for some years - to refresh their skills.

Details of the practical 4 week course held in Ipswich are given below.

PRACTICAL SURVEYING COURSE

This course is an ideal means for those with some marine knowledge who want to move into the surveying arena to learn the skills to help them do so. There are limited numbers of delegates to ensure everyone receives personal support throughout the course. The next course starts on 13th April 2015.

Set up by Fellow YDSA member Paul Stevens, moved to Fox's Marina, Ipswich with the autumn 2013 course. Paul has now handed over to Martin Evans and Aidan Tuckett who will be taking the course forward with a number of experienced surveyors and other professionals within the industry.

The Practical Surveying Course is certificated by one of our partners, the International Boatbuilding Training College (IBTC) and those who pass the course may apply for Graduate membership of YDSA free of charge for one year (other entry requirements exist). For a list of current Graduate members please click here.

For details of the course contact Martin Evans at shipshapesurveys@googlemail.com

Practical Yacht Brokerage Course

Our sister company, ABYA, provides a highly beneficial two-day intensive course as an introduction to professional brokerage. This course provides prospective yacht brokers and dealers with all the information they need to operate both successfully and professionally. For more experienced brokers and dealers it is a cost-effective way to keep abreast of recent developments and the latest legislation, maintain their professionalism and competitive edge.

Course leader Owen Box, a former ABYA President, has brokerage experience over many years. The speakers on the course are marine industry professionals in their specialist fields and provide topical and instructive lectures relating to Marine Law, VAT, Insurance, Marine Finance, Registration, the Internet, Selling Skills, Surveying & the RCD, plus an insight into new boat sales.

One year's free membership of ABYA is available to delegates on successful completion of the course, providing they are working in brokerage and can submit a complete sales file, and have PI insurance.

  • For insurance underwriters as part of a damage survey

YDSA members are encouraged to develop their knowledge and expertise by attending seminars, forums, conferences and other events. All of these events contribute to your Continuous Professional Development (CPD). To find out more on CPD, click here.
