‘Interstellar’ Final Trailer; Early IMAX Screenings Announced

1 October 2014 9:37 AM, PDT

Marketing for Interstellar has been heating up recently, and that continues today with a fresh trailer that includes plenty of previously-unseen footage.

Don’t worry, though, it doesn’t reveal much about co-writer/director Christopher Nolan’s sci-fi film that we didn’t already know; namely, that the story follows one “Coop” (Matthew McConaughey), an expert pilot who leads a mission into space – along with astronauts played by Anne Hathaway, Wes Bentley, and David Gyasi – to find a new home for humankind, now that the ecological system on Earth can no longer sustain us. Meanwhile, back on Earth, Jessica Chastain’s character (presumed to be McConaughey’s grown-up daughter in the film) must struggle to stay alive in an increasingly harsh and volatile environment.

Mysteries teased in both the latest Interstellar trailer and previously-unveiled TV promos – such as the non-Earth planet with mountain-sized waves and that monolith robot (Click to »

‘The Interview’ Set Visit: Seth Rogen & James Franco vs. North Korea (in Canada)

1 October 2014 9:30 AM, PDT

I didn’t have to be asked twice if I wanted to visit the Vancouver set of Seth Rogen’s latest comedic endeavor, The Interview. Not only was he teaming up with James Franco again, it’s always a treat to watch the comedy genius in action especially behind the scenes.

Rogen co-directs The Interview with his childhood buddy, Evan Goldberg (This Is the End, Pineapple Express), drawing from a script that the pair co-penned with former Daily Show executive producer, and South Park writer, Dan Sterling. The duo who refuse to be pigeon-holed are touching on a new genre: Dr. Strangelove-esque absurdist political satire.

‘Dracula Untold’: ‘Meet Mirena’ Featurette & Early Reviews

1 October 2014 8:43 AM, PDT

Dracula Untold is certainly one of this month’s most anticipated films; not just because it retells Dracula’s origins by way of a stylized big-budget war epic, but also since it could be the first brick in Universal’s rebooted Shared Monster Movie Universe. However, before we carry on about sequels and/or related upcoming monster movie reboots, we first need to see if Dracula Untold goes over well enough to warrant this iteration of the Dracula mythos being continued.

Luke Evans headlines Dracula Untold as Vlad Tepes, a noble warrior in 15th century Transylvania, who strikes a deal with dark supernatural forces in an attempt to protect his kingdom from an invading sultan (Dominic Cooper). The latest featurette for the movie focuses on the character of Mirena (Sarah Gadon) and her relationship with her husband, Vlad. In other words, if we’re being ...

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’: Christian Bale on Moses, Biblical Scale, & Charlton Heston

1 October 2014 8:38 AM, PDT

One of the most surprising aspects of Ridley Scott’s upcoming biblical action epic Exodus: Gods and Kings is that it marks the first director/actor collaboration between Scott and star Christian Bale. Just seems these two should’ve crossed filmmaking paths long before now, does it not? Lucky for us and audiences, we’ll soon get to see the fruits of their labor when Exodus arrives in theaters December 12. Until then, there is a new trailer to analyze along with intel from Bale himself.

Last night in Los Angeles Screen Rant was invited to view the trailer and roughly 30 minutes of footage, followed by a ten-minute conversation with Bale moderated ...

5 Reasons to Watch ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ on Home Media

1 October 2014 8:27 AM, PDT

This summer marked one of the worst domestic box office performances in years – and even films that scored well with critics had a struggle to maintain strong legs, commercially. Case in point: Edge of Tomorrow, which was released to rave reviews this past June, with many praising Doug Liman’s latest for being an entertaining thrill-ride that represents what audiences love to see at the multiplex.

As many know, Edge couldn’t translate its strong word-of-mouth into hefty domestic profits, finishing in second during its opening weekend before engaging on a long, slow crawl to $100 million  domestically (near $370 million worldwide). Whether you chalk up its performance ...

‘Exodus: Gods and Kings’ Trailer #2: God is Greater Than Pharaohs

1 October 2014 7:51 AM, PDT

With Exodus: Gods and Kings, director Ridley Scott (Gladiator) is attempting to retell the biblical story of Moses leading the Israelites on the exodus out of Egyptian slavery; a story that has been told and re-told cinematically each and every Easter, in the form of the 1956 film, The Ten Commandments.

In this new version of the story, actors Christian Bale (Dark Knight) and Joel Edgerton (Warrior) take over the roles of Moses and Rameses II, which were famously played by Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner in Ten Commandments. If you’ve seen that older film (or any of the previous trailers for this film), then you know the basic layout of the story is still the same: Moses and Rameses start out as brothers; Moses learns he is destined to be leader of the Israelites; God delivers prophecies of Israelite freedom and Egyptian ...

‘Horrible Bosses 2′ Trailer #3: Chris Pine & Christoph Waltz Are Bad Shower Buddies

1 October 2014 7:28 AM, PDT

Having finally escaped the torment of their horrible bosses, Nick (Jason Bateman), Dale (Charlie Day) and Kurt (Jason Sudeikis) are plotting to become their own men in upcoming comedy sequel Horrible Bosses 2. Having invented a somewhat dubiously-titled product called the Shower Buddy, the three entrepreneurs find themselves seemingly in luck when made an offer by a father-son business team (played by Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz).

Unfortunately it turns out that horrible bosses are a widespread problem and the trio’s new business partners are more interested in ripping them off than making them rich. Since the three friends have already proven themselves to be inept at the art of murder, they settle on a new tactic: kidnaping (sic).

Two of the horrible bosses from the first film – Dave (Kevin Spacey) and ...

‘American Horror Story: Freak Show’ Trailer & Opening Titles [Updated]

1 October 2014 6:47 AM, PDT

The October arrival of a fresh installment in Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk’s American Horror Story anthology series has been going on for the past three years, and that tradition continues this month with the release of Freak Show. A full-length trailer for Freak Show, dubbed “Opening Night”, has dropped (see above), and it offers a nice and quick introduction to the world of the eponymous circus act, as seen through the eyes of the conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler (returning Ahs player Sarah Paulson).

In addition to offering a glimpse at Freak Show‘s main villain – the disturbed killer Twisty the Clown – at its end, this trailer also lays out the underlying social commentary that Murphy and Falchuk are serving up with this helping of American Horror Story. Observations about U.S. culture are, after all, as fundamental to the ...

‘Sons of Anarchy’: Any Excuse To Rage

30 September 2014 8:16 PM, PDT

[This is a review of Sons of Anarchy season 7, episode 4. There will be Spoilers]

-

You can always count on Sons of Anarchy to express the seriousness of a situation through the inherent expendability of its supporting cast.

In that sense, the massacre that takes place (mercifully) off screen in the closing moments of the episode is meant to carry as much propulsive energy as the gruesome, graphic, and unexpected murder of a Deputy Sheriff Cane (Lamonica Garrett) when he and his partner stumble upon Jax and the Mc delivering a package of drugs to a bunch of Aryans with itchy trigger fingers.

The Aryans manage to shoot ...

‘John Wick’ Final Trailer: The Badass is Back

30 September 2014 7:24 PM, PDT

We’re now less than a month out from the theatrical release of Keanu Reeves’ new R-rated action flick John Wick. Distributor Lionsgate released the final trailer for the film earlier today, and it promises one hell of a wild ride. Check it out in full above.

For those who haven’t been following the project’s development, John Wick stars Reeves as the titular character, a retired badass hitman who is quite happy just living life in seclusion with his reliable car and his lovable dog. That is until John rubs the hothead son of a crime boss the wrong way during a chance encounter. Goons are then sent to beat up Wick, steal his car, and murder his beloved pet – who was a gift from his late wife.

Of course, the underworld kingpin’s misguided offspring probably thought that would be the ...

‘Community’ Season 6 Won’t Include Yvette Nicole Brown

30 September 2014 5:54 PM, PDT

It’s become a tradition with Community; the happy is paired with the sad. Last season, fans were gifted with the shocking return of series creator and seasons 1-3 showrunner Dan Harmon before they found out that Donald Glover would leave the show after a handful of episodes. Without Glover’s Troy Barnes, the show soldiered on with the help of new and returning cast additions like Jonathan Banks and John Oliver, but the loss was felt on the screen with the absence of the comedic force that was the Troy and Abed team-up.

This season, which might qualify as an actual miracle, exists because Yahoo Screen came in at the 11th hour to save the cancelled sitcom and check off half ...

‘Zombieland 2′ Back in Development; New Writer Attached

30 September 2014 5:40 PM, PDT

In the five years since Zombieland hit theaters, zombies haven’t gone out of style one bit. AMC’s The Walking Dead still has record-breaking ratings, will soon be joined by a companion series, and already has another zombie-infested series on Syfy  - Z Nation –  for competition. In theaters, World War Z was successful enough to earn a sequel and Pride and Prejudice and Zombies has finally moved out of development hell.

Zombieland, too, was back briefly when Amazon produced a pilot episode based off the movie for one of its potential original series. The Zombieland series would’ve continued the adventures of Columbus, Tallahassee, Wichita and Little Rock, but its pilot didn’t win itself enough fans and Amazon chose ...

8 Movies We’re Looking Forward To: October 2014

30 September 2014 5:07 PM, PDT

After a decidedly quiet September things are really starting to get exciting as we move to October. This is the month when the genre fare starts mingling with the rare blockbuster, and the awards contenders start popping up every now and again. Last year, for example, October included the release of Best Picture nominee and Screen Rant favorite Gravity, as well as actual Bp winner 12 Years a Slave.

Granted, we don’t think October 2014 will be quite as fruitful, but it still has plenty of intriguing releases all the same. Almost every demographic has at least one picture to look forward to this month, and yes there are even a few horror flicks on the schedule. It’s ...

‘Rush Hour’ TV Series in the Works; ‘Scrubs’ Creator Set as Showrunner

30 September 2014 4:15 PM, PDT

In what is quickly becoming a weekly tradition around here, it’s now time to announce that yet another popular film franchise is heading to the small screen. Up on the revival chopping block this week is the Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker buddy cop trilogy, Rush Hour.

The first film opened in 1998 to good reviews, and made nearly $250 million worldwide on a budget of only $33 million. That kind of success obviously led to a sequel in relatively short order, which earned about $100 million more than the original, despite less flattering critical sentiment. Six years later, Rush Hour 3 was released, and the law of diminishing returns finally caught up with the series. Critics ravaged ...

‘Fantastic Four’: Miles Teller On Changes Between Reboot & Original Movie

30 September 2014 2:50 PM, PDT

In the midst of big 2015 films like Avengers: Age of Ultron, Terminator Genysis, Jurassic Park 4 and Star Wars Episode VII, we’re also getting a reboot of the Fantastic Four movie franchise – though you won’t likely find it on most people’s “Most Anticipated” list for the year.

First of all: there’s been criminally little marketing or promotional material for the movie – a big missed opportunity, as far as we’re concerned. Secondly, the casting has been way off target from what most fans expected; actors Miles Teller (That Awkward Moment), Kate Mara (House of Cards), Miles B. Jordan (Chronicle) and Jamie Bell (Jumper) are playing the principal four roles of Reed Richards, ...

‘Big’ TV Comedy Series Picked Up by Fox

30 September 2014 2:32 PM, PDT

When there are no more original ideas in Hollywood, the spirits of 80s movies will rise up from the dead and take over our screens. Which is to say, lately a lot of the attention has been turned on classic 80s action sci-fi movies, with Total Recall, RoboCop and Escape From New York all getting the remake treatment – but really, no piece of nostalgia is truly safe, nowadays.

A few years ago Twentieth Century Fox was reportedly looking to 1988 Tom Hanks comedy Big for inspiration, buying a pitch for a movie called Premature Maturation that was described as Big meets The Hangover. The main difference was that instead of one kid getting transformed into an ...

‘Agent Carter’: Marvel Confirms Dominic Cooper’s Return as Howard Stark

30 September 2014 12:22 PM, PDT

Marvel’s Agent Carter might be the first title produced by the studio to have a female lead, but the supporting cast is very testosterone-heavy. Enver GjokajChad Michael Murray, Shea Whigham and James D’Arcy have all joined Agent Carter in recent weeks, and Captain America: The First Avenger star Dominic Cooper has long been expected to reprise his role as Howard Stark, the father of Iron Man.

This makes sense in light of the official synopsis for Agent Carter, which describes protagonist Peggy Carter (played once again by Hayley Atwell) finding herself “marginalized” after America’s fighting men return from abroad following the end of World War II. Refusing to stay stuck in her administrative duties, Carter takes on ...

‘Tetris’ Movie In Development

30 September 2014 11:09 AM, PDT

In recent years, Hollywood has sought inspiration from some unlikely sources. In addition to the current trend of bringing scores of comic book characters to the big screen, toys, board games and theme park rides have all been adapted into feature length films. The success level of such films has ranged from disappointing releases (Battleship) to critical and box office hits (The Lego Movie), with this fall’s Ouija as the next film based on such alternative source material.

However, one type of film that hasn’t exactly lit up the box office lately is video game movies. Need for Speed performed well worldwide earlier this year but brought in only $43 million domestically. With the exception of Resident Evil (which could be ending soon), few video games have led ...
