Radio Sailing
Radio controlled yachts are very similar in performance to full sized yachts or dinghies. They are controlled from the shore via a radio transmitter and race around a set course. Radio controlled yacht racing follows the same racing rules as full size boats and requires similar skills in boat positioning, tactics and tuning.
The Model Yachting Association
The MYA consists of a group of radio sailing clubs all with the same enthusiasm for racing model yachts. Currently there are about 1750 members with 125 clubs in the UK offering safe sailing waters and regular racing.
Where do I start?
The best way to start is to find the nearest club to where you live. There may not be one on your door step; however there should be one within a reasonable distance. Use the MYA's Club Locator to find a club near you.
Try out on the water
Make an arrangement to visit a club on a race day to see first hand how the day is run. Some clubs have boats they can loan to new members to see if they like sailing before they buy a boat of their own.
How much does it cost?
Purchase and maintenance costs of a suitable yacht can vary from as low as £300 for a kit or an older secondhand boat up to £1800 for a state of the art professionally built radio yacht.
Where can I find boats for sale?
Once you have decided upon the class you want to sail, ask the club you will be joining as they should know of any boats within the club that are for sale. Alternativley, visit the MYA's Boats for sale section.
