Disney's live action 'Beauty and the Beast' gets a date with destiny

It's somewhat amazing to realize that the release calendar for March 2017 is now complete with four different tent poles.  The next (and potentially final) "Wolverine" is slated for March 3,* Legendary Pictures will bring forth their version of the King of the Apes in "Kong: Skull Island" on March 10, "Divergent" will end its cinematic run with "The Divergent Series: Allegiant - Part 2" on March 24 and, surprise, Walt Disney Pictures' live action "Beauty and the Beast" will now open on March 17.  Can you guess which one will garner the most attention?   *A Hugh Jackman movie opening less than two weeks after the Oscars? It didn't work for "Chappie," but, boy that would be an incredibly convenient time for him to host again, wouldn't it? On Monday, Walt Disney Studios confirmed "Beauty's" release date and the impressive cast which had leaked to the press over the past few months.  Emma Watson will play Belle, »

Season premiere review: 'Community' - 'Ladders/Lawnmower Maintenance'

"Community" is back for an improbable sixth season, now on Yahoo Screen, and I have a review of the season's first two episodes(*) coming up just as soon as the score in my head changes from Trent Reznor to Johnny Cash doing Trent Reznor... (*) Note: the rough cut versions that critics saw of both episodes were deliberately missing the end credits tag on the first episode, so if Donald Glover or Chevy Chase or someone else made a surprise appearance in it, I won't know until I wake up on Tuesday and check it out on Yahoo. "Community" at the start of season 6 has lost its original network, three of its original castmembers, plus several notable recurring players. (John Oliver and Jonathan Banks are otherwise occupied at the moment, and even the actor who plays Fat Neil is off scaring your parents about the internet on "CSI: Cyber.") It's certainly »

The Best Green Things In Movies and TV

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!  On this day, we honor the culture of the Emerald Isle by adorning ourselves in its hues.   But green is not just the color of holiday-themed accessories. It also has an illustrious history of playing critical roles in our films and television programs. Below are some of the greatest appearances green has made on our screens.  Erin go bragh!  – All the way to the box office! 17. The Curtains in "Sound of Music"   What better way to introduce a family of neglected children to the concept of fun clothes than with a little splash of green, even if it is from the furniture. 16. The Green Man in “Always Sunny in Philadelphia" Green may not be proud of Paddy's pub, but Paddy's is proud of it. 15. Luke’s lightsaber in “Return of the Jedi. For episode six, Skywalker’s blue lightsaber got an extreme makeover. Two green thumbs way up! »

Interview: 'Community' star Jim Rash on The Dean's sexuality, directing and more

The cast of "Community" has come a long way from where they were when the comedy premiered on NBC in 2009 to where they are now as "Community" begins its latest rebirth on Yahoo. Not to take anything away from the career arcs of Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi or Alison Brie, but Jim Rash's journey from comic day player perhaps best known for a resemblance to Moby to beloved supporting performer, Oscar-winning screenwriter and acclaimed indie director seems like the biggest leap. As the cast of "Community" has shifted in recent years, Rash's Dean Pelton has become increasingly central and as Rash's creative profile has grown, thanks to "The Descendants" and "The Way Way Back," he was able to write an episode in The Lost Dan Harmon-less Season. The sixth "Community" season begins on Tuesday (March 17) on Yahoo and Rash has been able to add TV directing to his »

Review: 'Better Call Saul' - 'Bingo': It takes a thief

A review of tonight's "Better Call Saul" coming up just as soon as I picture "The 25th Hour" starring Ned and Maude Flanders... "What are you doing?" -Mike "The right thing." -Jimmy The consensus on last week's episode was that it was easily the strongest hour of "Saul" to date, and a lot of you stated your desire to see the show pivot more into that direction, not only by giving Jonathan Banks more to do as Mike, but by returning to the dark emotional palette of "Breaking Bad" rather than the light comic antics of Jimmy McGill, elder care lawyer. When I spoke with Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould (and editor Curtis Thurber) about the show's ever-changing opening title sequence, we also briefly discussed the response to "Five-o," and Gilligan said that while they like having the ability to experiment — to do an episode where Mike is now the »

Review: 'Get Hard' goes limp and relies on hate for its humor

Austin - It will come as no surprise to anyone who reads me on a regular basis that I am a Will Ferrell fan. Even before he made the jump to leading man in the world of features, I was already fully onboard. There's just something about the particular brand of lunacy that so many of his characters embody that entertains me completely. There are few things I enjoy more than seeing what happens when Ferrell and Adam McKay are turned loose on something together, two halves of one mutant brain, the combination of the two resulting in something remarkable. Etan Cohen, you are no Adam McKay. I actually do like some of Cohen's work. "Idiocracy," for example, is a script I adore, co-written by Cohen and Mike Judge, and "Tropic Thunder" is tremendous. But "Get Hard" is impossible to defend thanks to a disastrous choice made early on in the development process. »

See This Before You Die: Hal Hartley's 'Trust'

"Dad, give me five dollars." The opening line of writer/director Hal Hartley's "Trust" is delivered in a monotone by Adrienne Shelly, as she applies purple lipstick and stares blankly into a compact mirror. It's a striking shot that establishes everything you need to know about her character Maria -- a high school dropout and case study in youthful entitlement and vanity. Over a career spanning three decades Hartley has been an amazingly prolific filmmaker, directing a total of 15 features and 18 shorts. Unlike many of his late '80s/early '90s indie contemporaries (Quentin Tarantino, Gus Van Sant, Richard Linklater, et al), he has never catered to mainstream tastes, and his work has been greeted by the public in kind. He is known for creating stylized worlds that feel somehow hermetic and worldly, stilted and soulful, in films ranging from 1992's "Simple Men" to 1997's "Henry Fool," and »

A man just won $500,000 for answering the easiest question ever

Thanks to a strange prize structure, a man won $500,000 on the Australian game show "Millionaire Hot Seat," a spinoff of "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?", for answering an incredibly easy question.  The gigantic prize is the result of the show's competition with another Australian game show called "Million Dollar Minute." According to BuzzerBlog, an outstanding game show news resource, the reason the prize was so high has to do with a building jackpot: "'Million Dollar Minute' had a contestant win $500,000 today and turn it down for the chance at $750K tomorrow. "Millionaire Hot Seat," in retaliation, did a Jackpot week last week where the final amount played for, win or lose, gets added to the Jackpot. So today this question usually worth $20,000 was worth $520,000. It's probably the easiest $500,000 I've ever seen. Slightly desperate. Imagine getting on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and winning a jackpot because you could »

277 days until Star Wars: This insane Millennium Falcon papercraft will blow your mind

That’s no moon plastic model. For over Four Years, hobbyist Bernard Szukiel painstakingly recreated the Millennium Falcon, using nothing but paper, fiber optics, and the patience of a Jedi Saint. Image Credit: Bernard Szukiel The model is 38” long and is staggering in how detailed it is. From the equipment bay to the satellite dish to the working Led lights inside the cockpit and the gun tub, Szukiel spared no facet of the Falcon’s make-up. Abbi Jacobson on the fun of picking guest stars for 'Broad City'

Comedy Central's "Broad City" is the perfect platform for stars Abbi Jacobson and Ilana Glazer to show off the weirder and funnier parts of having a like-minded best friend in New York. Sometimes their antics are downright bizarre and other times the show subverts its gonzo sense of irreverence with sweetness. At any rate, the show has attracted some excellent guest-stars, including Janeane Garofalo, Susie Essman, Seth Rogen, and -- in an upcoming second-season finale -- Patricia Clarkson.  We chatted with Jacobson at Paleyfest to discuss the fun of picking guest-stars, her proudest funny moments, and her biggest pet peeve.  »

Outrage Watch: 'Jinx' viewers slam the New York Times

Welcome to the March 16, 2015 edition of Outrage Watch, HitFix's (almost) daily rundown of all the things folks are peeved about in entertainment. Today's top story: why are fans of HBO's "The Jinx" slamming the New York Times? Spoilers To Follow After the Grey Lady sent a "push notification" to subscribers of their smartphone app reporting that the subject of the HBO documentary series had seemingly confessed to three separate murders on the show's finale, viewers tweeted their outrage at having the episode "spoiled" by the newspaper. As a West coast fan of The Jinx, I'd like to make a formal complaint against the New York Times app push notifications. — Liz Meriwether (@lizmeriwether) March 16, 2015 The ending of #TheJinx sure was more satisfying than #SerialPodcast. Too bad The New York Times spoiled it for me with a breaking news alert — Eric Borgman (@ericborgman) March 16, 2015 Love The Jinx. Love The New York Times. »

As 'Community' heads to Yahoo, what crazy turn will its story take next?

Tonight at 12:01 a.m. Pacific, "Community" will become the latest cultish show canceled by a traditional TV network to live again via a streaming service — and the first of its kind to migrate over to Yahoo Screen, which will be debuting the rest of this sixth season every Monday night/Tuesday morning at this time(*). (*) There are two episodes tonight, then one a week going forward. So long as I have advance screeners, as well as time in which to do it, I'll be running episode reviews about a half hour (or, tonight, hour) after the episodes go live on Yahoo, for those of you who are up at that time of night (or in a more favorable time zone) to watch it. This is the latest improbable behind-the-scenes development in a series that has seen more than its fair share, including the firing and later re-hiring of creator Dan Harmon, »

Review: Amy Schumer is only pretending to be a 'Trainwreck' for Judd Apatow

Austin - While it was introduced as a work in progress, Judd Apatow's new film "Trainwreck" looked pretty much locked and ready to release when it played on Sunday afternoon at the Paramount. Since "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" was released, Judd Apatow's filmography has been made up exclusively of films he wrote, many of which felt very personal. "This Is 40" felt to me like a summation of a lot of those ideas and themes, and I'm glad he took some time to decide how to follow that film. "Trainwreck" was written by Amy Schumer, and her voice runs clearly through every part of this movie. What Judd's done here, and it's not as easy as it sounds, is turned his own considerable success into a shield he could use to protect Schumer and guarantee that her voice reached the screen intact. As a result, "Trainwreck" is lacerating, smart, »

Grant Gustin explains why 'Flash' won't get too dark, plus The 3 H's of 'Flash'

For all of its levity, "The Flash" has always had as its backdrop the death of Barry Allen's mother and his father's conviction. Things took a darker turn in a recent episode when evidence suggested that Young Barry had witnessed time-bending Flash Barry on the night of the murder. This revelation meant two key things: The first, that time-travel was something that might become a part of Barry's skill-set, but the second being the sad knowledge that even by going back in time, Barry hadn't averted the tragedy. It's the kind of morbid information that could linger as the season progresses, but on Saturday's (March 14) PaleyFest 2015 purple carpet, Grant Gustin told me that hasn't exactly been the case. "I've actually been wanting for it to linger more. We haven't addressed it too much, because there've been so many other things to focus on," Gustin said in the video interview above. »

Lego 'Jurassic Park' game lovingly lampoons films with irreverent Lego humor

This June, Lego and Universal Pictures are teaming up to give all four “Jurassic Park” films — including the brand-new “Jurassic World” — a minifig makeover. Lego has had enormous success with their video game franchises. Lego Star Wars, Lego Batman, Lego Indiana Jones, and more all manage to entice children and adults alike. The cartoon style makes it fun for kids but, like all good family entertainment, Lego layers in jokes and depth for the adults. Add in light-hearted self-awareness and a willingness to poke fun at the source material, and it makes perfect sense that “Jurassic Park” would be ripe for Lego-ification.   (function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/all.js#xfbml=1"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); Post by Lego.   Think Clever Girl has what »

Al Pacino on why 'Fifty Shades of Grey' is the new 'Godfather'

Al Pacino spends the whole of his new movie "Danny Collins," about a washed-up rock star who reconnects with his family, charming us with small, funny moments. It's a refreshingly amiable role for the man who racked up Oscar nominations for grimmer characters in "Serpico," "Dog Day Afternoon," "Glengarry Glen Ross," and of course the first two "Godfather" movies. We chatted with the legendary screen icon about the fun of working with costar Annette Bening, the trick of playing charming characters, and why -- wait for it -- "Fifty Shades of Grey" is the new "Godfather."  "Danny Collins" opens in theaters March 20.  »

Greg Berlanti compares 'Arrow'/'Flash' spinoff to 'The Magnificent Seven'

This may not be 100 percent accurate, but if you cover the TV industry, hardly a week seems to go by without producer-writer Greg Berlanti having a pilot picked up. The "Everwood" and "Brothers and Sisters" veteran has most recently been working to expand the presence of the DC Comics Universe on The CW.  "Arrow" launched in 2012 and immediately became on of The CW's foundational hits. "The Flash" was loosely spun out of "Arrow" this season and has become the sort of breakout smash The CW has been search for years, reliably topping some of its competition on other networks. And it was only a couple weeks ago that it was announced that Berlanti and his team are developing an elaborate "Arrow"/"Flash" spinoff featuring a slew of characters from both shows, including Brandon Routh's Atom, Victor Garber's Firestorm and Wentworth Miller's Captain Cold. On the PaleyFest 2015 purple »

March Mayhem returns with more Heroes vs. Villains from movies & TV

Last night, the Ncaa announced the teams that will compete in this year's March Madness men's college basketball tournament. Now it's time for the return of our own take on bracketology, with year 2 of our March Mayhem Heroes vs. Villains tournament. A year ago, we picked 64 of our favorite good guys and bad guys from movies and television and pitted them — and, more importantly, their fanbases — against each other. To the surprise of many, fans of "Xena: Warrior Princess" rode in to trounce all comers. This year, we kept the top two finishers from each bracket (which gives Xena a chance to defender her crown), but otherwise brought in fresh blood. Voting for the first round begins now, so go vote, then come back here and yell at us about seeding, notable snubs (many of which could wind up in next year's tournament), etc. Have fun. »
