No Glare in Bright Sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, the latest Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper — no annoying glare, even in bright sunlight.

Won't Tire Your Eyes in the Dark

Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its next-gen front light — unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes — so you can read comfortably with less eyestrain. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Charge Monthly, Not Daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last up to eight weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at ten), unlike tablets that need to be charged each night.

Read Comfortably with One Hand

Thinner than a pencil, lighter than a paperback — and over 30% lighter than iPad mini. Comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for long reading sessions.

No Distractions

Kindle Paperwhite is purposely designed as a dedicated e-reader. Indulge your love of reading without interruptions like email alerts.

Whiter Screen, Darker Text

IMPROVED — Enjoy even better contrast on the latest Kindle Paperwhite. Whites are whiter and blacks are blacker, creating sharp, clear text. The high-resolution display allows for elegant typeface options including Baskerville and Palatino, and all fonts on Kindle Paperwhite have been hand-tuned at the pixel level for maximum readability and comfort.

Fast, Easy Page Turns

IMPROVED — The new Kindle Paperwhite's processor is 25% faster. Books open and pages turn faster for a seamless experience. Kindle Paperwhite also uses the latest in capacitive touch technology, more accurately responding to the smallest touches.

3.0 out of 5 stars Still no e-book support for Canadian libraries! Nov. 12 2013
Hey Amazon! When are you going to offer access to Canadian library e-books? It's been several years of waiting now. In fact I got tired of waiting and bought two Kobo e-readers for my kids; they're great.

I've owned my Kindle for a couple of years and really like it. It's a space saver, it's fantastically legible, offers fingertip access to a dictionary, the ability to buy and receive books in seconds, etc. It's great!

However, I just bought two Kobo e-readers for my kids because Kindle still does not support EPUB books from Canadian libraries and Kobo does. I got tired of waiting and thought you, and others, should know.

Pros:
Light weight
Fits in coat pocket
Bright, clear screen and fonts
Very even back light
Enough storage
Good for nothing but e-books

Cons:
Built-in browser is almost useless
Very slow screen refresh
Does not always turn page on a single tap, sometimes turns page backward
Battery life about 1 week, not the advertised 3 weeks. This is reading 1 or 2 hours per day with backlight at 60%
UPDATE: Battery life has deteriorated in one month of owning the device from about 1 week to about 2 hours. Either the unit is defective or this is a serious design flaw.
Cannot advance by chapter
Organizing a large book collection is really tedious
Cannot organize book categories using external tools, like Calibre
Does not support .epub format

I bought this device to read books, and I like it for the purpose. I could have bought a Nexus 7 for only $75 more, and I'm still not sure that I made the right choice. Having said that, the Kindle is much lighter to hold, which becomes important if I'm reading for long periods. The backlight and screen contrast are really excellent. I have had no trouble seeing it in all lighting conditions I've tried, though I haven't tried bright sunshine yet.

This device does not support many e-book formats, so if you have a collection of .epubs already, you will need to use Calibre to convert them to .mobi format. It's not a huge problem, but the conversion is imprecise so you end up with weird characters scattered around your .mobi book. That's probably my biggest gripe about this device, over all.

Why did I list "good for nothing but e-books" as a pro?

4.0 out of 5 stars Cannot be used for Canadian Library books Oct. 20 2013
Verified Purchase
Although I am happy with the operation of the Kindle Paperwhite, I had not realized that it cannot be used to borrow ebooks from Canadian public libraries. Had I known this in advance, I might well have chosen a Kobo instead, or one of the other e-readers which are compatible with libraries in Canada.

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than I expected Oct. 25 2013
By Sophia Burns TOP 500 REVIEWER

A few years ago, I got the Kindle Keyboard. I absolutely loved the device, it was perfect for reading out in the bright sun, as well as in airports etc. I loved not having to drag a thick book with me, only to find out halfway that I didn't feel like reading that at all. With the Kindle, I could take hundreds of books in my purse, and it weighed less than one paperback! My world was perfect... I would never need another device. Or so I thought.

When the new Paperwhite was announced, I finally broke down, lured by the prospect of the backlight. What a surprise! Now I can read it in any environment, sunlight, lamplight or a dimly lit room. I can even read it in bed at night, without disturbing my family. With the brightness adjustment, you can set it to any ambient preference, so it will never be too bright or too dim.

Not only that, but the font is so crystal clear, it truly is like reading a high quality book. One of my gripes with the Kindle Keyboard was the speed... to download about 10 books took as many minutes and a lot of clicking and browsing. This new Paperwhite does the same task in a mere 10 seconds, you just select the items you wish to download one by one and the download takes place entirely in the background. Another new feature I love is the way you can quickly scan through the book without losing your position. When reading a detective for example, I find myself flipping back quite a bit to remind myself who was who again, or what happened when... with the old Kindles that was virtually impossible. Now you just swipe up and you can scan through the pages, just like a paperback where you put your thumb between the pages and flip through the book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Great...but not in the Great White North. Aug. 31 2014

The best e-reader on the market hands down. Amazing screen. Great backlight. The Amazon cover is $40 which is step but it is lovely.
HOWEVER...if you are Canadian you can't use a Kindlle for Library books without breaking the law (thanks Harper...). Therefore if you dont have any money invested in Amazon books, look to the kobo glo, which will work with Canadian libraries. Avoid the Fire and Arc as they are just tablets so you cant use them outside...they are as bad as iPads for e-reader function.

4.0 out of 5 stars Why no answer to the Canadian e-library question Dec 26 2013
By Carol TOP 100 REVIEWER

I gifted myself with the newest Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas and am really excited to use it. Unfortunately, I have to finish 'Winter of the Worlds' in paperback before I can get reading on the Kindle but I have already loaded a good selection of books and experimented with the features.
But all my friends and family want to know about the issue of not being able to access books from Canadian libraries. I cannot seem to find the answer anywhere as to why Kindle PaperWhite works this way. It is a big issue with a lot of people and I would like to see Amazon address the question.
Thanks
