Let me preface this by saying, my 5-star rating is based on what this phone IS, not what it ISN'T as this is the only fair way to review the phone. But, I am going to go over both so you know what you're getting yourself into:

*** INTRO ***

This unlocked Fire Phone (which is the same as the AT&T; version with horrible reviews, only it's unlocked), is an all around excellent phone with some pretty cool technology not found on other phones. The big thing to remember here is who the manufacturer is: Amazon. That said, it's important to realize that the phone is going to be centered around the Amazon ecosystem. Many of the 1-star reviews on the AT&T; version were written by people who didn't read the description or reviews before dropping a lot of money and committing themselves to a 2-year contract.

This all started with the Kindle, and has since evolved into the Kindle Fire Tablets, and now, the Fire Phone. As is the case with Microsoft and Apple, Amazon is in direct competition with Google and Apple in terms of their "App Stores" and their music sales, hence the reason you're not going to find Google Apps or iTunes on this phone... we'll go into that in more detail below, but let's start with the display:

*** DISPLAY ***

The display is a standard 4.7" 1280x720p TFT LCD screen so its not the super high-resolution 4K or quad-HD displays that are becoming mainstream on new smartphones. The Fire phone comes in with a 315 ppi pixel density which is not bad, but it's lower than a lot of the competition. In short, you're eyes are not going to distinguish anything above 300 ppi so the Fire Phone's display is perfectly adequate. *** DETAILED TECH ALERT! *** If you're happy knowing the screen is acceptable, skip to the next section...

By far the best phone I've had, very fast, good battery life, camera takes really good photos. I'm using it with Walmart's Family Mobile plan, my total monthly bill is only $39.64. I'm getting sick of seeing the negative posts about not having Google Play Store or apps.

I literately spent 5 minutes installing the apps. I used the firefly feature on the phone to grab the tutorial url off my pc then installed 4 apps and I was in business with Google Play Store. Shortly after I added the dodol launcher for my home screen, also downloaded "launcher switcher" which allows me to quickly open the default Amazon home screen if needed. I've add pictures of my home screen. This took all but 15 minutes. Takes care of pretty much all the complaints. I'm sad I only ordered two of these phones. Amazon has changed the ship time to 1 - 3 weeks now.

Keep in mind I didn't have to root the phone or anything, as of now the background on home screen is black but I'm sure someone will figure out a work around for that.

I've created a full tutorial on how to side load apps. Install Google Play Store and change your home screen launcher, if you want to get rid of the Fire Home Screen.

Please mark helpful if you followed the tutorial so other Fire Phone users can find it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Greeat Feature-rich Smart Phone for $100 November 26, 2014
Verified Purchase
I'm not an AT&T; customer so I kind of disregarded the AT&T; Fire phone, but then I saw an unlocked device for $199, so I looked at the reviews of the AT&T; version and almost dismissed the product because of the 2 1/2 stars rating, that is until I noticed that most of those reviews had nothing to do with the product. The majority of the one stars came from either Greenpeacers protesting against Amazon (the company, not the phone) or people complaining about that the phone only works on AT&T;, which is exactly as it was advertised. Take out the Greenpeacers, misguided reviewers who slammed the phone because it is an AT&T-only; product, and folks who for some reason think a company should not attempt to make money by making it easy to purchase content and services from the handset maker, and you have a solid four-star rating; and as an AT&T; contract-required device, I'd agree with the 4 stars.

But after one day with the product, given the price point and value, I'm giving the unlocked version of this phone 5 stars. Here's why:

First, if you are Prime, or considering being a Prime member, the phone is 99 bucks for both the already-Prime customer and the non-Prime customer because either way, you get Amazon Prime free for one year. Prime gives me free two-day shipping, and includes a vast array of included books, video, music, cloud storage, and audible books among other stuff which I had been consuming on my Kindle tablet. Then I got Fire TV and that blew me away. Point is, to me, there's really no reason for a middle class family with a mailbox and electricity to not have Amazon Prime, so again, the phone is $99 if you consider the free Prime, and I consider that value in my rating.

You will not find a smart phone anywhere in the world with these specs at this price.

4.0 out of 5 stars $199 plus a free year of Prime? I'll bite the bullet. November 28, 2014
By Chris
Verified Purchase
Was planning on upgrading my iPod touch this holiday season, but I saw that there was now an unlocked Fire Phone. For $199 I could get a 32GB iPod Touch, or a Fire Phone.

I can play music on both devices.

I can stream music on both devices over WiFi (I don't use data, so mobile streaming wasn't a factor).

I purchase more music through AmazonMP3 than I do iTunes. I dig the Free Prime Music, as well. Not sure if that is on the iOS app.

The Camera ability on the Fire Phone is far superior, not only because of the megapixels (13mp vs 5mp), but because it has FLASH.

The built-in audio playback is significantly better on the Fire Phone.

Free year of Prime with purchase of Fire Phone (phone is essentially $100 at this point). My Prime was up next month, so I essentially saved $99 going with Fire Phone over iPod.

I have the option to buy a data package and use mobile internet if I choose, with Fire Phone. No such option with an iPod.

It was really a no brainer to choose Fire Phone in my case.

Dynamic Perspective is interesting. I only received the phone about 5 hours ago, so I haven't gotten a whole lot of time to check out features and secrets. I will say, all the tilting shortcuts are nice, but a little tricky at first. I could live without them, but I'm sure they will become second nature.

Take the 1 star reviews with a grain of salt. Those people seem to have their own agenda, which doesn't seem to involve owning the product and giving an actual review. Amazon did not delete reviews. This is a separate listing from the AT&T; phones and this Unlocked GSM product version was released on Nov 25, 2014.
