"Partners" is Barbra Streisand's new album, featuring 12 inimitable new Streisand duets with the world's greatest male vocalists. This is the legendary artist's first duets album in more than a decade, and debuts new studio recordings of Streisand classics and others songs.

"Partners" is comprised of 12 songs, many of which are regarded as Streisand classics. Among the songs included are "New York State Of Mind," with Billy Joel, "Come Rain Or Come Shine," with John Mayer, "Love Me Tender," with Elvis Presley, "The Way We Were," with Lionel Richie, "What Kind Of Fool," with John Legend, "People," with Stevie Wonder, "I Can Still See Your Face," with Andrea Bocelli, "Evergreen," with Babyface, and Ms. Streisand's first studio-recorded duet with her son Jason Gould, on "How Deep Is The Ocean."

Ms. Streisand is currently the best-selling female recording artist in history and the only woman to make the All-Time Top 10 Best Selling artists list. She has recorded 51 gold, 30 platinum and 13 multi-platinum albums in her career, including nine #1s, and is the only recording artist to have accomplished #1 album in five consecutive decades. Barbra Streisand's new album "Partners" finds her pairing with male superstars from Billy Joel, Lionel Richie, to Blake Shelton and Andrea Bocelli on covers of her songs and standards. Co-produced by Babyface (who sings with her on "Evergreen" as well as the lovely horn-sprinkled "Lost Inside Of You" - the latter on the deluxe edition), the album finds Streisand in fine form, even if she's not as fiery as when these were originally recorded.

The big band Jazzy "It Had To Be You" opens the collection, a vibrant duet with Michael Bublé. A youthful-sounding Stevie Wonder duets and plays harmonica on the enchanting "People" (with a Bossa Nova lilt), while John Mayer lends his voice and Bluesy guitar to "Come Rain Or Come Shine".

Other standouts include the grandiose "I Still Can See Your Face" with Andrea Bocelli (this has got to be the standout vocal performance), "How Deep Is The Ocean" with her son Jason Gould whom she gives room to shine (and he sounds almost as good as his mother, a bit like George Michael), "What Kind Of Fool" with John Legend's soulful croon against an elegiac string/piano backdrop after an ornate orchestral overture, a theatrical "Somewhere" with Josh Groban, and a reverent "Love Me Tender" with Elvis and delicate guitars. I have to confess, I found "The Way We Were" with Lionel Richie disappointing. This is one of my favourite Streisand songs, but the arrangement falls flat and Richie seems intimidated vocally.

"I've Got A Crush On You" with Frank Sinatra appears on the deluxe, as well as "I Finally Found Someone" with Bryan Adams, "I Won't Be The One To Let Go" with Barry Manilow, and "Guilty" with Barry Gibb, all previously released.

So, I’ve just finished listening to the new Barbra Streisand album Partners in one complete pass. After a month of posts and hype about it, was it worth the $13.99 I plunked down for it?

Well, mostly, yes. This is actually one of the most listenable albums she’s put out in several years. Let me be clear that while I usually enjoy Barbra as an artist, she’s certainly recorded her share of tripe, and a number of her albums the last few years have consisted of mostly mushy, middle-of-the-road gooey love songs with no real bite. Partners, to a large degree, remedies that quite nicely.

From the sound bites of the You Tube videos I viewed, I honestly expected to like certain songs while pretty much hating a few others. What surprised me was the difference that actually hearing a few of those songs I expected to hate in full made. A case in point is the cover of “People” with Stevie Wonder. I’m quite fond of Stevie Wonder and his artistry, but the song is given a bit of a bossa nova treatment which I expected to be cringe-worthy. Surprisingly, it’s not.

A few standout tracks for me include the Andrea Bocelli duet “I Can Still See Your Face” and (yet another) version of “Evergreen,” this one with Babyface. His voice and style remind me a lot of a young Stevie Wonder, and the overall end result is quite smooth and pleasing to the ear.

I was really surprised at how much I liked “I’d Want It To Be You,” her collaboration with Blake Shelton. I’m not a big Blake Shelton fan, but their voices blend very well, and the song is a good one by itself. And the normally bombastic “Somewhere” is given a restrained, dare-I-say intimate reading with Josh Groban on board.

I imagine there will be plenty who carp that Barbra Streisand is playing it safe. Well, if this near perfect album is what safe is all about, then let Barbra always play it safe.

Her voice is deep, pure and enchanting. It is impossible not to be captivated by her voice - and her interpretations - on every number. Have you heard them before PARTNERS? Yes. Did they get better with age? They sure did.

Whereas in her earliest recordings Barbra Streisand felt it was mandatory to lose her cool, she now is in complete control of her phrasing and the results are nothing less than fantastic.

Starting with IT HAD TO BE YOU (with Buble), you can hear the joy as she deliciously sings the words. Partly she lets down her guard and that is when the real fun begins for nobody can enjoy a song more than Barbra Streisand.

Her duets are legendary. A generous singer, she frequently enjoyed sharing the spotlight (Judy Garland, Neil Diamond . . . the list of dignitaries is endless) and here she has picked a crop of smooth and sweet sounding men who join her in singing old favorites.

It might take a few a moment or two to get use to slightly altered versions of her most popular numbers (People, Evergreen, The Way We Were) but her tweaking only adds a new dimension to favorites. As she herself said back during her 2006 concert, she was always given beautiful songs to sing but, especially at the beginning, was too young to understand them.

Well, that is no longer an issue. Sweetly, with an aching intensity, she sings the sentiments so that you can enjoy them all over again.

Yes, I found the Elvis duet a bit strange but one still must give her an "A" for trying and you still have to bow down to their beautiful voices.

A personal plea? How about a follow-up with her dueting with some female vocalists? Until then, I will listen to PARTNERS and enjoy each and every number.
