Beta Alphas: Sony shows mockups of upcoming FE lenses for Alpha 7 system

Sony is showing mockups of four new lenses for its full frame FE series for the Alpha 7 on its stand at CES, as well as two wide angle converters. With only six FE lenses to choose from at the moment, Alpha 7 users will be pleased to see some physical evidence of these lenses that Sony initially announced on a roadmap at the Photokina show in September. Update: Nikon will service flare-affected D750s for free

Nikon USA has issued an update to its communication around issues with flare in some D750 camera bodies. Upcoming GoPro Hero4 firmware will enable new photo and video features

GoPro has released details about upcoming firmware updates for its Hero4 action cameras; the new firmware versions will be delivered next month, enabling new photo and video features like in-camera time lapse creation. Read more

Sony issues firmware 1.10 for Alpha 7 II

Announced in late November, the Sony Alpha 7 II has received its first firmware update. Somewhat thin on specifics, firmware version 1.10 promises improved image stabilization. The firmware details cite improvements in IS when half-pressing the shutter, in 'Focus Magnifier' mode, during movie recording, and with 'other functions'. Read more

Toshiba announces world's first SDHC card with NFC

Toshiba has announced an SDHC card equipped with NFC, claiming it to be the world's first. With the corresponding 'Memory Card Preview' app downloaded to a mobile device, the user can tap the card to view thumbnails of 16 images and see available storage. Read more

G-Technology launches new G-DRIVE ev rugged portable storage with all-terrain-cases

Digital storage brand G-Technology has announced a collection of new portable hard drives designed to survive in difficult environments. The two available G-DRIVE ev models, equipped with Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 connections, will come housed in what the company calls an ATC – All-Terrain-Case – said to be able to withstand a 2m/6.5 ft drop onto a carpeted concrete floor. The ATC is also water-tight and will float should the drive fall into a body of water, and can also be removed to house other drives in the G-Technology Evolution Series. Read more

Fujifilm X100T real-world sample gallery posted

The Fujifilm X100T is the third iteration of the company's enthusiast-level fixed-lens compact, and we've followed up our initial real-world gallery from the camera with even more samples. The majority of the images that follow were shot as JPEGs in the Classic Chrome film mode, a new film simulation not included in previous iterations of the camera. See gallery

Toshiba offers FlashAir III wireless SD card

Toshiba has announced a third generation of its FlashAir wireless SD cards. Like the previous version, the Toshiba FlashAir III acts as its own wireless LAN point for sharing to smartphones, tablets and computers. The newly introduced card boasts 'enhanced photo sharing and management features,' and maintains the same Class 10 rating as its predecessor. Read more

Kodak announces IM5 Android smartphone

Before CES there were rumors that we would see a Kodak-branded mobile device at the show, but those who were expecting an innovative, imaging-centric gadget have been disappointed. The Kodak IM5 has arrived and appears to be nothing more than a nondescript, mid-tier Android smartphone with Kodak branding. Read more

Hands-on with Fujifilm's new XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens

It's been on Fujifilm's X-series roadmap for a while, but now it's real - the XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR is a 24-83mm equivalent, weather-sealed standard zoom for Fujifilm's high-end X-series interchangeable lens cameras, which offers a fast maximum aperture of F2.8 throughout its zoom range. Asus announces Zenfone Zoom smartphone with 3x optical zoom

At its CES press conference in Las Vegas Asus has announced the ZenFone Zoom, a smartphone with 3x optical zoom lens that is only 12mm thin. The ZenFone Zoom runs Android 5.0 and features a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS screen and up to 128GB of built-in storage. Read more

Fujifilm announces XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens

Fujifilm has officially released its XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens, which the company teased on last year's lens roadmap. The 16-55mm is equivalent to 24-84mm when mounted on an X-series body and offers an internal focusing system and 'twin linear motor' which Fujifilm says will allow for fast and silent AF. The lens is sealed in fourteen places and has three aspherical and three ED elements and a Nano-GI coating to reduce flare. Read more

Hands-on with Nikon's new D5500

Nikon's D5500 is, on the face of it a pretty minor update to the D5300, but with the key addition of a touch-sensitive rear LCD screen and slightly altered ergonomics. In almost every other respect the D5500 is a compact, lightweight 24MP entry-level DSLR cut from almost exactly the same cloth as its predecessor. We're at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, where we got our hands on a pre-production camera. Click through for some pictures

Nikon D5500 adds touchscreen and flat picture profile, loses GPS

Nikon has announced the D5500, an upper-entry-level DSLR and successor to its D5300. It provides a 24.2MP DX-format sensor with no optical low pass filter. Improvements over the previous model include the addition of a touchscreen, which is a fully articulated 3.2-inch 1.37M-dot affair, as in the D5300. A flat picture profile is added as a video mode option, which offers 1080/60p recording like its predecessor. Meanwhile, the D5300's built-in GPS has been lost. Read more

Nikon introduces lightweight FX 300mm f/4 and updated DX 55-200mm f/4-5.6 ED zoom

Nikon has taken the wraps off of two new versions of existing lenses in its NIKKOR lineup. The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED VR II and AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f/4E PF ED VR are introduced for CES 2015, underway tomorrow in Las Vegas. Read more

Panasonic Lumix CM1 coming to the US

Introduced at Photokina 2014, the Panasonic Lumix CM1 Android smartphone boasts a 20MP 1-inch type sensor with an f/2.8 lens. Originally only available in France and Germany, it has been announced at CES 2015 that Panasonic's smartphone creation will be making it to American shores later this year. Read more

Nikon acknowledges 'issue' with flare in some D750 bodies

Nikon has released a statement to reassure users of the D750 that it is 'working on measures to address' an issue some models have with unusual flare patterns that can occur when bright light sources are just outside the frame. Although the effect seems to occur only in certain units, and comes about only when the light source is at a particular angle, it appears as flare at the top of the image with a darker band closer to the top of the frame. Learn more

Panasonic releases trio of compact superzooms

Panasonic also announced a trio of compact superzoom cameras, covering all price ranges. The base model is the Lumix DMC-SZ10, which has a 16MP CCD, 24-228 mm equiv. lens, and flip-up 2.7" LCD. Stepping up to the DMC-ZS45 (TZ57 outside of US) gives you a 16MP CMOS sensor, 24-480mm lens, 1080p video, Wi-Fi with NFC, and a larger/sharper LCD. The top model is the ZS50 (TZ70) that has a 12MP sensor, 24-720mm lens, 60p video, and a 1.2M dot EVF. More details

Panasonic offers up pair of slightly updated rugged cameras

Panasonic has released a pair of rugged cameras that have very small changes compared to their predecessors. The top-end model is the Lumix DMC-TS6 (FT6 outside of the US), which offers minor cosmetic changes versus the TS5. The budget-friendly DMC-TS30 (FT30) can dive a meter deeper than the TS20 that came before it and also has more onboard memory. Dive in for more

Ricoh announces it will launch Pentax DSLR in spring and lenses later

Pentax owner Ricoh has released very limited details of a DSLR and a collection of three lenses that it says it will launch in the future. Reference images that accompany the announcement appear to show a mid-range APS-C DSLR that the company says will feature a CMOS sensor. This may arrive in stores in spring this year. The camera is shown with a new 18-50mm f/4-5.6 collapsible zoom lens attached - which will be available at about the same time. Read more

Canon wants to make Connect Station your photo and video hub

While it's been quietly shown behind glass on several occasions, Canon has made its Connect Station CS100 official. This compact box houses a 1TB hard drive which can store thousands of photos and videos. Photos can be transferred by tapping an NFC-equipped 2015 Canon camera to its top plate, or via USB or memory card. Users can then view their media on their HDTV using an included remote control. The CS100 can also share photos to social networking services via Canon's Image Gateway service. If you still have a spare HDMI port on your TV, you can pick up the CS100 in April for $299.

Canon announces five PowerShot compacts

Canon has introduced five PowerShot models, ranging from budget to midrange. The SX610 HS has a 25-450mm equiv. lens, 20.2MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 3" LCD, Wi-Fi with NFC, 1080/30p video. Stepping up to the SX710 HS adds a 25-750mm lens, DIGIC 6 processor (the only model with this), and 60p video. The SX530 HS pairs a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor with a whopping 24-1200mm lens. On the budget end there's the ELPH 170 that has a 20MP CCD, 25-300mm lens, and 720p video. A cheaper ELPH 160 has a 28-224mm lens and no image stabilization. More details

Phase One updates tethering and Raw conversion with Capture One 8.1

Camera and software manufacturer Phase One has released a new version of its Capture One Raw file converter that includes new tools, added flexibility and options, as well as support for additional cameras. Updating the version 8 that was made available in September 2014, Capture One 8.1 allows users to edit files in other applications, such as Photoshop, from inside the program and it now allows up to 16 adjustment layers to be used at one time. Read more

Flickr Wall Art removes Creative Commons prints

Flickr has apologized to users upset over its Creative Commons-licensed print options. Effective immediately, all CC images have been removed from its Wall Art printing service. Users are still able to order prints of their own images, photos provided by Flickr’s own licensed artists and photographers who have requested their images be included. Read more

Leica issues T (Typ 701) firmware update

Leica has released firmware version 1.3 for its T mirrorless camera (Typ 701). The latest update promises a collection of performance improvements for the unit's startup time and image quality, along with general bug fixes. Learn more

Fujifilm announces macro tubes, tethering software and X-series firmware availability

Update: Firmware updates are now available - click through for a download link. Fujifilm has unveiled two macro extension tubes for its X-series interchangeable lens cameras, as well as a launch date for the previously-promised Fujifilm X-T1 firmware. More firmware updates are also announced for the X-E2, X-E1, X-Pro1 and X-30, as well as the introduction of tethering software for PC. Read more

Motorola Moto X (2014) camera review

Despite using the same name as its predecessor, the new Moto X is a very different device. Its 5.2-inch 1080p OLED screen, thin bezels and aluminum body give it a premium feel. In the camera department it offers a 13MP sensor and F2.25 aperture, 4K-video and a dual-LED ring flash. We put it through our comprehensive testing - see if the 2014 edition is a better choice for mobile photographers than the original Moto X. Read review

Think Tank launches Airport Helipak for Phantom Quadcopter

Camera bag manufacturer Think Tank Photo has announced a backpack designed specifically for photographers using Phantom Quadcopters paired with GoPro cameras. The Airport Helipak is said to accommodate DJI Phantom 2, Phantom 2 Vision or similar quadcopters with their accessories, along with a 15-inch laptop, small cameras such as GoPros, and personal effects. Read more

Canon updates Digital Photo Professional to version 4.1.50

Canon has updated its Digital Photo Professional 4 (DPP) software to version 4.1.50. The update brings support for a couple of new lenses and several camera models, improvements to multiple functions, and compatibility with 64-bit native environments, among other things. The newest version, says Canon, incorporates feedback from both APS-C and older full-frame owners eager for 'the very latest Raw workflow solution'. Read more

Real-world Test: Shooting Fashion with the Fujifilm X-T1

The X-T1 is Fujifilm's first weather-resistant interchangeable X-series camera. It is built around a 16.3 MP APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor housed in a die-cast magnesium body. Offering a traditional design with five physical top plate dials, two command dials, and six programmable function buttons the X-T1 also has a high resolution OLED viewfinder. Phase One and Alpa release official details and pricing of A-Series medium format cameras

Phase One has announced official details of its new A-Series medium format cameras after information about the new pairing of the company's digital backs with an Alpa body and lenses was leaked in November. As was reported at the time, the series will comprise Phase One 50MP, 60MP and 80MP backs, combined with the Alpa 12 TC body and a choice of three lenses – the Alpagon 5.6/23mm, Alpar 4.0/35mm and the Alpagon 5.6/70mm. Read more

Huawei Honor 6 Plus offers three 8MP cameras

Huawei has announced the Honor 6 Plus with not one, not two, but three 8MP cameras. One serves as a selfie-capture unit at the front while the other two are lined up side-by-side on the rear of the device.
