Early Reviews Portend Sundance Breakout in Stylish Historical Horror 'The Witch'
5 hours ago | Thompson on Hollywood | See recent Thompson on Hollywood news »
Park City is open for business, and word on the street says buyers are already courting edgy, historical horror throwback "The Witch." Distributors caught an early glimpse of the film on Thursday ahead of its Tuesday afternoon premiere at Eccles Theatre. Produced by Parts and Labor’s Lars Knudsen and Jay Van Hoy and directed by Brooklyn-based designer turned first-time director Robert Eggers, this Us Dramatic Competition entry looks to be a witchy brew of style and scares. Taking cues from Kubrick and Bergman, "The Witch" recreates Puritan New England, just before the religious hysteria of the 1692 Salem trials, where a colonial family has settled on a fledgling farm at the edge of a forest. Doom and dread set in as food grows scarce, someone goes missing and a malevolent, wood-dwelling presence encroaches. The cast includes Anya Taylor Joy, Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie and Harvey Scrimshaw. Though the early trade reviews, »

Joaquin Phoenix's Idea For A Jesus Biopic Is Very Blasphemous, Also Brilliant
5 hours ago | cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news »
Joaquin Phoenix delivered one of the year.s best performances in Inherent Vice, for a movie too few people saw. Even less people saw The Immigrant, even though Phoenix was . again . amazing. Prior to those two 2014 parts, Phoenix completely crushed it in both Her and The Master. Basically, if I had a bankroll, I.d tell Joaquin Phoenix to go do whatever the hell he wanted. even though his next idea sounds crazy, bizarro bonkers. The eccentric actor was speaking with The Guardian in support of Paul Thomas Anderson.s Inherent Vice, which imagines Phoenix as the stoned-out SoCal private investigator "Doc" Sportello. But the conversation swirled around like marijuana smoke in the breeze, touching on so many aspects of the film industry. And when Phoenix talked about a project he.d like to do, he spoke about doing a superhero version of The Last Temptation of Christ, where Jesus »
Review: ‘James White’ Starring Christopher Abbot & Cynthia Nixon Is A Bruising Portrait Of Self-Destruction
just now | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »
Dark stories of self-destruction and suffering with miserablist leanings tend to be the narrative bread and butter of Sundance. And they’ve become such a cliché, that some wary audiences’ hackles tend to rise at the slightest sign of despairing stories that are anything but the feel-good hit of the year. Producer turned director Josh Mond navigates some of these familiar and potentially off-putting terrains in his feature-length debut “James White.” The results are sometimes mixed, but thanks to a strong visual eye and a terrific cast, this anguished, but intimate coming of age tale tends to (mostly) recompense for some of the darker and more despondent elements that will test some resolves. Opening in a dank, sweaty club, the titular James White dances with such wild, feral abandon it suggests catharsis and some kind of spiritual exorcism. It turns out to be the eve of his father’s wake »

Sundance Review: Christopher Abbott and Cynthia Nixon Triumph in Devastating 'James White'
just now | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »
For close to a decade, the filmmaking collective known as Borderline Films has produced eerie dramas brought to life with complex techniques: Antonio Campos' "Afterschool" and "Simon Killer" followed alienated men driven to killer impulses, while Sean Durkin's "Martha Marcy May Marlene" involved a woman reeling from her time spent in a cult. Borderline's third member, Josh Mond, has largely maintained a producorial role—until now. With "James White," Mond displays the same engrossing narrative sophistication found in his colleagues' work, while at the same time reaching for more profoundly affecting depths. Mond's feature-length debut as writer-director bears many of hallmarks found in previous Borderline efforts: It focuses on a troubled young adult battling his internal demons and explores his conundrum through a series of precise cinematic devices. But unlike other Borderline efforts, "James White"—essentially a movie in which a »

30 minutes ago | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »
For months, we’ve heard two seemingly conflicting rumors about one Star Wars spinoff: one, that it’ll be about Boba Fett, and two, that it’ll be about Han Solo. The common assumption was that one or the other had to be false — but if this latest rumor is true, it could mean both of the other ones […]

Sundance Review: 'How to Change the World' is a Rousing History of Greenpeace
40 minutes ago | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »
In "How to Change The World," director Jerry Rothwell unearths extraordinary footage to tell a story about fighting for a cause — both by outlining the terms of the fight and the people engaged in it. As an organization, Greenpeace has been fighting for maintaining Earth’s natural environments for decades. Yet while it's in 40 different countries, and emboldened by almost three million supporters, the organization originally began with a group of hippies protesting nuclear bomb testing in Vancouver. From this starting point, documentarian Rothwell ("Donor Unknown, "Deep Water") explores the origin story of one of the most influential activist movements in history. "How to Change the World" structures its story around five steps to leaving a truly lasting impact on the world. Told through the writings of journalist-turned-activist Robert "Bob" Hunter, the reluctant leader of the movement. The writings are narrated by Emmy-winning actor »

Campus Rape Doc ‘The Hunting Ground’ Premieres at Sundance
52 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »
On Friday afternoon, “The Hunting Ground” Kirby Dick’s anticipated documentary about the growing epidemic of sexual assault on college campuses premiered at the Sundance Film Festival.
“I want to thank to the hundreds of survivors who interacted with us,” Dick told the packed crowd at the Marc Theatre before the screening. Appearing with four of the survivors in the film at a Q&A after the screening, which received a standing ovation, he added: “This is a problem at schools all across the country,” Dick said.
His film, which will be released by Radius/TWC in theaters on March 20 and on CNN later this year, persuasively argues that college campuses don’t act out against reports of sexual assault because they don’t want to scare off prospective students and alumni, particularly when it comes to fraternity and student athletes. The film not only talks to students, but administrators, »

Gymnastics Comedy ‘The Bronze’ Has The Funniest Sex Scene in Years [Sundance 2015]

The Bronze gets a gold medal for ambition. Directed by Bryan Buckley, it stars the Big Bang Theory‘s Melissa Rausch (who also co-wrote the film) as former Olympic hero Hope Ann Greggory. Think Kerri Strug turned Tonya Harding. A decade removed from a life-changing Bronze medal, she’s now a foul-mouthed, delusional has-been living in her […]
