First Mate, Trinity Sailing Foundation

Trinity Sailing provides adventure sailing holidays and youth development voyages aboard our fleet of traditional sailing vessels. We are looking for a Mate for our vessel 'Provident', a gaff rigged ketch, built in 1924. This is a great opportunity for anyone with a passion for adventure wanting to develop a career in the sailing industry..

The Mate will be part of a team of four full time staff, including the skipper, cook and bosun. During cruising holidays and Sail Training voyages you will be responsible for the safe running of the deck.
Specific responsibilities include:
• Instructing trainees/guests in the sailing of the boat
• Leading a watch when on passage
• Maintenance of the vessel and systems
• Playing a key part in the provision of sail training and the overall holiday experience.
The 2015 Provident refit will include some major work, including a new engine and rewiring. The successful candidate will assist contractors and the skipper in fitting the systems. No engineering experience is required, just enthusiasm and a willingness to work hard and get stuck in!
Provident will be based in Brixham, sailing the south west coast, the Channel Islands, Brittany and the Isles of Scilly.


Applicants should have at least an RYA Yachtmaster Coastal qualification with commercial endorsement. Gaff rig experience would be advantageous but not essential. The position starts in February.

Refit Volunteers - Trinity Sailing Foundation

Trinity are looking for volunteers to help with their busy refit.

There's a real mix of rigging work, woodwork, engineering, electrics, painting, cleaning, organising and loads of other jobs to do between now and the start of April (when we are putting to sea again), and we would really appreciate your help with all or any of this. The work is varied, the atmosphere on board is great and there are several friendly pubs nearby!

It doesn't matter whether or not you have sailed on any of the Trinity vessels before, you will be made very welcome. You can come for a day, a few days, a week, a month or the whole refit!
We ask that all volunteers bring the following items:
• Sleeping bag
• Towel
• Sturdy footwear (rigger boots recommended)
• Practical warm clothing for maintenance work

(We have old oilskins and suchlike we can lend to volunteers for particularly messy jobs).
Trinity will be glad to provide you with food and accommodation (on board one of our vessels in Brixham) in return for your help. We are very flexible in dealing with our volunteers and appreciate all the help we can get.

Third Mate - Spirit of Moray, Gordonstoun Sail Training Department

The Gordonstoun Sail Training Department has a vacancy for Third mate on board their 24m Oyster Ketch Ocean Spirit of Moray. This new post is intended as an opportunity for individuals over 21 years of age interested in starting a career in Sail Training and as such there is no minimum qualification required (although an ENG1 is needed), however candidates will have to demonstrate a commitment to Sail Training and a track record of sailing in positions of responsibility aboard Sail Training vessels. With the possibility of access to funded training, this post has excellent potential for those hoping to start a full time career in Sail Training.

Candidates should be available to start in March.

First Mate Ocean Youth Trust North

A suitably qualified and experienced First Mate is required to work on OYT North vessels.

The Trust has operated for 14 years as an independent educational charity, working with young people from all backgrounds, offering them the opportunity for personal development through challenge and adventure under sail.

OYT North has an exciting future and they are seeking an energetic and responsive person who has the potential to develop into new roles as the trust expands.

While sailing experience up to RYA/MCA Yachtmaster Coastal standard with a commercial endorsement is a pre-requisite it is equally important that you are able to engage with young people and volunteers - motivating them and leading by example.

The Gordonstoun Sail Training Department requires an experienced First Mate. The duties of this full time post include sailing on board "Ocean Spirit of Moray" their 80' ketch, instructing Seamanship in the School's Dipping Lug Cutters and assisting with winter maintenance programmes.  Candidates for this key role should already have extensive experience in positions of responsibility on Sail Training vessels and hold RYA Yachtmaster Offshore with Commercial Endorsement and a current ENG1. Refit Volunteers - Ocean Youth Trust South

2014 Refit volunteers needed. OYT South's vessel John Laing undergoes a substantial refit every year between November and March. Volunteers are needed to join the team for a minimum of a month during this time - ideally for the full four and a half months.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone planning a gap year or career break, or looking to move into the Sail Training industry: most previous OYT South core team refit volunteers have gone on to paid sailing work.

Volunteers receive food and accommodation, as well as experience in boat repairs and maintenance.

A hard-working, responsible and enthusiastic approach is essential; practical skills in any aspect of boat maintenance is an advantage.
