30 people were rescued from the dutch brig 'Astrid' after she ran aground off the south coast of Ireland on Wednesday 24th July. The RNLI and the Irish Coastguard mounted a major rescue to ensure all 23 trainees and 7 sea staff were evacuated safely. It appears the brig suffered engine trouble and was unable to stop herself drifting ashore in the strong onshore winds. A spokesman for Irish Sail Training said 'The captain reacted extremely swiftly in sending out his Mayday signal. This resulted in the Coastguard arriving on the scene within 10 minutes.'
The Irish Coastguard and the RNLI have been praised for their efforts in ensuring the safety of all on board.
Many will fondly remember 'Astrid' for being based in Weymouth and involved in Sail Training for many years. She has now been under dutch ownership for about 7 years. It is as yet unclear whether the vessel can be salvaged.

Jolie Brise, one of the most famous pilot cutters in the world and the star of this year's Glandore Classic Regatta , rounded the Fastnet Rock today as part of the 80–boat historic Glandore fleet.
Jolie Brise is celebrating the centenary anniversary of her construction by the Paumelle yard in Le Havre in 1913. The world famous gaff-rigged pilot cutter was the last boat to carry the royal mail under sail and has won the Fastnet Race three times, including the inaugural race in 1925.
Jolie Brise is owned, maintained and sailed by the pupils of Dauntsey's School.
The 56' gaff-rigged pilot cutter built in Le Havre in 1913, launched by the Paumelle yard to a design by Alexandre Pâris.

James Cook, the bright yellow yacht of Tyneside based Sail Training and youth development charity Ocean Youth Trust North, is to take part in an amazing musical event transforming the North Sea into a concert hall.
James Cook will be anchored off the North East coastline this Saturday for Foghorn Requiem, an ambitious musical performance by British composer Orlando Gough. The spectacle features more than 50 ships and the Souter Lighthouse Foghorn and is part of the Festival of the North East.
James Cook, a 70-foot long ketch, has been chosen as one of the armada of vessels which will sound their horns at sea, alongside three North East brass bands, to create a musical score heard for miles along the South Tyneside coastline. The unusual performance marks the disappearance of the sound of foghorns from Britain's coastlines. Foghorns are being gradually decommissioned and replaced with new satellite navigation technology.

The Tall Ships Regatta 2014 (Thursday 28 August – Tuesday 9 September), from Falmouth to Greenwich, is officially open for entries and captains and crews are promised a special event, combining exciting racing and a relaxing cruise-in-company.

The race starts from the Tall Ship friendly port of Falmouth reputed to be the third largest natural harbour in the world and an excellent venue for visiting Tall Ships from around the world.
Since the ships first visit in 1966, Falmouth hosted the Funchal 500 Tall Ships Regatta in 2008 and The Tall Ships Race event in 1982. The economic impact of the event left a lasting impression on the area, attracting 100,000 visitors and generating over £12 million for the local economy.
The finish port, Royal Greenwich, will be hosting the first major Tall Ships event since London hosted the Tall Ships Race in 1989.
Paul Bishop, Head of Race Directorate, Sail Training International said, "This Regatta will see an interesting fleet of up to 50 sail training vessels and Tall Ships from around the world competing in competitive racing over three days. It will follow the main Tall Ships Races in 2014 – which visits Harlingen, Netherlands; Fredrikstad, Norway; Bergen, Norway and Esbjerg, Denmark."
