5.0 out of 5 stars Worth it! Nov. 19 2014
By Rad Talk TOP 1000 REVIEWER
After using the "Kindle for PC" app on my laptop for a few years, I decided to get a dedicated e-reader.

This one is ready-to-use straight out of the box, very easy to follow menu/ tap settings, etc, and a useful tutorial. Kindle content downloads quickly and easily.

I chose this one (over Paperwhite) only because I don't usually read in low-light conditions. The screen reads fine even in artificial light. Since the interface and operating system for both are exactly the same & this model is 1oz lighter, the $60 surcharge (for Paperwhite) didn't feel worth it. In-store (Staples), I compared them at the same light level (lowest setting on Paperwhite = this model's one and only setting).

Not sure why there's no sign-out of "My account" option but my guess is the content can't be read if so. Also why there's an option to protect it w/ a Device Password and/or add Parental Controls.

To fully charge it, I used my BlackBerry USB power adapter or there's an included USB-only cable. Have yet to buy a case* for it.

I also found some videos on YouTube that were very helpful in helping me decide which model to choose. :)

For this price and as a simple, effective e-reader, it's absolutely worth it.

ETA: * = I've since bought (and love) this case: MoKo Amazon Kindle 7th Gen Case - Ultra Slim Lightweight Smart-shell Stand Cover Case for Amazon Kindle 2014 ( 7th Generation ), BLACK

I was a little surprised at how easy to use this was. The first time I turned it on, it asked me a couple of questions and was ready to go within a few minutes.
Alright, it does not have the romance of a book. But then, it does not close on you unless you stick your thumb right into the spine. You can read it with just a thumb! And you can change the font and text size, and make the same book different when you get bored.

Very very useful! There are plenty of free books to last me a fairly long time.

I bought the Kindle with the warranty and have not yet bought a case. A 30$ case for a 70$ gadget, really??

BTW: PDFs dont work as well as books. But at least you can have them accessible on the device.

Absolutely wicked device. Really appreciate the dictionary function. Only problem is the sorting function. It's very tedious to sort out large numbers of books.

Let's start with the good stuff - it does what it is supposed to do. It works, I can transfer my e-books, I can read what I want to read, mostly how I want to read it. But, it is a perfect example as well for what is NOT progress: I miss my old, near-first generation Kindle that survived about 4 years (we had four in our house, and mine survived the longest). First, the feel of the previous one: the plastic was higher quality and had a nicer feel. The current one is glossy, easily scratched after only 2 months of use. It is thicker. Yes, it is touch-pad, but that is not better: there really isn't much that an e-reader has to do; so navigating with just a few buttons is actually preferable. The most frustrating part about this one is that because of the touch, I keep getting unwanted interruptions due to hitting the 'fonts' screen involuntarily and I always have to set it back to my preferred size - and I haven't yet discovered a way to lock my favorite font in. So Amazon, I hope this one at least is at least as durable, although I doubt it. It is not progress. But it works.

When Kindle e-readers tie up with Canadian libraries I will be happy to buy the best Kindle has to offer. Until then I'll use Canadian ones that DO allow hook-up with Canadian libraries.

I bought this to replace my broken kindle keyboard. I was expecting this much newer model to be a big improvement over the previous models, but I was disappointed. This kindle has a hard plastic casing, which feels cheap, rather than the rubberized back of my old one. It was also thicker, and has more square edges. I find it difficult to hold in my hand, my hand will cramp up, so I have to switch it to the other hand. I also prefer the button method of turning pages, because I always manage to touch the screen with my hand. I also find that sometimes when I hit the area meant to turn the page back, it will turn it forward instead.

At this point, being a voracious reader, I don't think I could do without my kindle, I really missed it while waiting for the preordered kindle to come to me, but honestly, I wish I would have bought a different ereader. This is not a good design, and frankly, I'm disappointed in Amazon for not making this better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good, well-priced e-reader! Nov. 2 2014

I purchased this kindle about a month ago. In my case I wanted something that I could push technical PDFs to, and read books during my commute to/from work. So far this hasn't let me down. I've downloaded a number of books on it both through amazon and Baen books. No issues so far. The ability to push PDFs to the kindle has been absolutely wonderful for work. I can have a technical manual on my kindle and work in front of my computer without having to swap between windows.

For the commute its been great. I have read two novels on it. The only downside is sometimes I tap the screen to flip the page and the bus hits a bump causing me to double-tap the book, and it zoom ahead a lot of pages.

The best thing of all - this kindle uses the same charger as my: cellphone, daughter's cellphone, and son't kindle fire.

4.0 out of 5 stars I don't have to baby it like I would if I bought the Kindle Voyage

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, but feels cheap and touch is too sensitive
Fast, but the touchscreen picks up a lot of unwanted touches. For example, the drawstring on my hoodie makes it change pages. Also, why is the back a rough, cheap-feeling plastic? Read more
