This is a preliminary review, but there is enough to say at this point for a write up.

Face scanning DOES work, but it's pretty touchy and a bit buggy. It's not perfect, but once you get a good scan and tweak it a little after the fact, it's far and away better than any generic head is going to be. My friend and I both own the game and were both able to get a pretty decent looking head.

Lighting conditions and shadows can create odd looks and an uneven scan can make you look absolutely grotesque. Having said that, as long as you turn your head slowly (I've gotten better results every time I turned my neck at a snail's pace) and you don't allow any up and down motion as you turn for your scan, it will give you a good chance of getting something worth keeping.

The problem I'm having (and to me it's a big one) is that I've had to do the face scan about 10+ times now. Each scan and processing take a nice little chunk of time. The first 4 or 5 were mostly me learning what and what not to do - and being pick. The second half were the result of continued disconnects and resets from the 2k server.

I also had to go through the initial team placement game three times now and still am not done with that because the server keeps saying my existing file can't be retrieved. The most recent time, I was purchasing an animation for my player, which couldn't be processed because of some disconnect. I was redirected to the main screen and when I got there, my myplayer file wouldn't load and my face scan was yet again reset to some default garbage.

I've basically spent 3-4 hours over the course of the latter half of my day unsuccessfully trying to just get my player made and get on a team.

1.0 out of 5 stars 2K Games can't keep their Servers up November 1, 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox One| Edition:Standard|Verified Purchase
I've been playing NBA 2K since the original release for the Sega Dreamcast. I don't return video games often, but I had to return 2K15.

I play about 90% in MyPlayer mode and this version does a few things that are really annoying. They made it so MyPlayer requires a constant connection to NBA2K servers for no good reason. Well guess what, these guys have no clue how keep their servers up and running so MyPlayer will literally stop a game in progress and return to the menu screen. From there you can launch back into MyPlayer mode, which will take you right back to the start of the game folks. It doesn't save your game progress!

You could literally be having the game of your life with 1 minute to go in OT, and then BOOM, NBA2K detects a server connection issue and its like the game never happened. This is just horrible software design, and the fact that they can't keep a simple web service up in the year 2015 is inexcusably bad.

The really sad part about this is the gameplay is great, and the graphics look sharp, but that doesn't matter when the game is absolutely crippled because of poor software design, bad quality assurance testing, and laughably bad web service infrastructure design.

2.0 out of 5 stars 2K servers strike again October 7, 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox One|Edition:Standard
2k has to have the worst servers of any video game in history. Can't do anything since all I do is play online. Can't say I'm surprised

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Graphics - sweat looks like sweat October 22, 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox One|Edition:Standard
I have created several very long reviews on other sites, so I will keep this one in TLDR status:

Pros:

Good Graphics - sweat looks like sweat, skin looks like skin, the game looks like the actual game.

MyCareer - Although the voice options are limited (I don't want to sound ghetto or ghetto-er), I actually kind of enjoy the silly dialog. The game is a lot more immersive due to the random convos from players and coaches, as well as your agent.

Offense - Once you figure out the controls you can do pretty well, even with an entry level player with no VC spent. If you drop some $ on VC though it makes the game more enjoyable... which is also a CON. I am sick of paying for a game and then feeling compelled to pay more money to get the most out of said game.

Gameplay - This game succeeds at making sure you play the game as it was meant to be played. Don't try and be the only man on the court or you will fail. If you distribute the ball and play smart, you will get plenty of chances to shine and will gain the respect of your teammates. Over all this game is extremely fun, and I have a hard time putting the controller down.

Cons:

Defense sucks. Normally not peoples favorite part of the game, 2k isn't helping things at all. It's hard to maintain position, and guarding even 'sucky' offensive players can be challenging. They could take me to the rack 75% of the time. The offensive players feel like they have a forcefield around them and they are covered in vegetable oil to boot. The best option is to play the lanes but don't sag off too much because they will drain the open shot. The only plus side to defense now is steals... they require some thought now and are much more rewarding.

1.0 out of 5 stars WORST. ONLINE EXPERIENCE. FOR A GAME. EVER. October 8, 2014
Platform for Display:Xbox One|Edition:Standard
I have been a fan of this series since NBA 2k2. For the past 13 years my friends and I have pre-ordered this game so we could pick up and play on day one. Over the past few years, server instability has led to a total lack of faith in our ability to get online and play what used to be our favorite game series. NBA 2K14's online issues were SO bad last year that my friends and I were able to connect to each other maybe 3 times in the first 4 months after the game was released!

The server issues were so troubling that for the first time in 13 years, none of my friends picked up NBA 2K15 on release date. I was a slavish enough fan of the series that I assumed there is no way 2K Sports could botch another year after the travesty that 2K14 was. I WAS WRONG.

2K Sports must not appreciate the fact that a huge contingent of their customers solely play online private matches with their friends. If that was the case, they would not continue to release an unplayable game. My friends and I have now sworn off the series as the connectivity issues are so bad, we are paying $60 for a game that we can only play 15% of the time we try to connect to each other. 2K Sports mistakenly wastes time and $$ on asinine "presentation" elements like having Shaq and Ernie do commentary, rather than focusing on the actual gameplay elements like fluidity and ease of connectivity. Heartbreaking.
